Theme: Quality Teaching in Higher Education: Preparing Students in the 21st Century Workplace

Concept Note

Higher education is the driving force in the knowledge-driven global economy. That is why greater challenge now is being put on HEIs to improve quality teaching to improve graduates’ employment skills. The CHED regulations, Philippine Quality Assurance in Higher Education, transnational debates like Bologna Process, accrediting agencies, competition among private and state-owned institutions all prompt institutions to put quality teaching on their agenda.

What is being done in MSU-IIT to ensure quality teaching?

MSU-IIT has put up policies and mechanisms to ensure quality teaching. Just to name a few, these include faculty development program, faculty supervision, monitoring of Teaching Efficiency Rating and conduct of Teaching Pedagogy Seminar.

Requiring faculty to undergo pedagogy seminars allow them to be better prepared for teaching and update them with the current trends in teaching at the college level. This year’s seminar-workshop aims to improve facilitation skills among faculty members to better prepare students in the 21st century workplace. The course is now blended with principles of online teaching, with emphasis on teaching as a profession, and the essential topics in planning, design and implementation of instruction, and assessments.

Objectives

The seminar-workshop aims at providing essential skills in teaching to faculty members especially the newly hired. Specifically, participants are expected to:

1. Appreciate teaching as a profession

2. Develop understanding of 21st century teaching pedagogy 3. Create/revise syllabus for the subject/s handled

4. Demonstrate effective use of instructional technologies 5. Develop web-enhanced learning activities

Participants

Participants for the workshop are faculty members from the institute who have not undergone pedagogy seminar. They are expected to have basic knowledge in MS Office or OOo Office application.
