This omission on the part of their management inevitably contributed to the demise of public relations firms. The life cycle of public relations companies is directly dependent on the recognized leadership orientation of their owners or leaders (presidents, chief executive officers or chief operating officers).

Background of the Study

The success or failure of PR firms in the Philippines largely determines their life cycle. Throughout their organizational lifecycle, PR firms in the Philippines have generally remained entrepreneurial.

Statement of the Problem

Viewed in the light of the life cycle of public relations firms, their success is a reflection of the way in which the government of a country plans and implements national development. In the life cycle of PR companies, they have to fight for their existence and survival.

Objectives of the Study

Significance of the Study

People in government hardly know the power and effectiveness of public relations as an agent of change in society. The study will provide educators with a greater insight into the organization, establishment and operation of local public relations firms in the country and their role in nation building.

Data Gathering Procedures

Apart from a 50-item Survey Questionnaire, informal interviews were conducted with target active public relations consultants and practitioners.

Instrumentation

The language validation of the questionnaire was criticized by a select group of PR advisors. Purposive sampling was used to identify respondents (companies and their management, and counselors or practitioners) were known through the Philippine Association of Public Relations Counselors, Inc. PAPRC, with thirty (30) members; Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP), one hundred and five (105) members; and the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of the Philippines (4A's-P), 60 members. Out of these three organizations with 201 members, only about seventy-six (76) members fell under the category of public relations firms.

Data Analysis Procedures

However, the case study focused on no fewer than seven (07) PR firms, past and present. Their activities serve as fitting examples of how PR firms succeed or fail in their quest for productivity and profitability within a given time period. The Likert scale was used to determine the extent to which respondents rated the activities, based on the managerial concepts of entrepreneurship and stewardship through a process of adjustment and alignment in strategic management, applied by legitimate public relations firms for their survival and industrialization .

Treatment of Data

Definition of Terms

Life cycle as given from a series of definitions means the age or “the length of existence or the average life span of a kind of organism or material object, especially in a particular environment or under specified conditions.” (De Geus, 1997) But to become an institution something or someone is firmly connected to a place or thing” or simply “giving character to be incorporated into a structured and often highly formalized system.” More importantly, in the internal environment, management generally capitalizes on its resources, the components of which are value or "the speed or scale of utility, importance, or overall value"; rarity or “characterized by unusual quality, merit or appeal;”. As for the external environment, the management of the companies will have to come up with an organizational blueprint or “the formal structure of the organization in a narrow sense –– organization charts, written work rules, activity patterns within the organization –– what is actually done by.

This process leads to the adaptation or adjustment of the structure, behavior or operation of companies in order to ensure the extension of life. It is “the act of correctly positioning or the state of adjusting parts relative to one another. The Corporate Planning Society of the Philippines defines strategic management as: “The complete cycle of planning, budgeting and monitoring/controlling the performance of implemented company programs for productivity and.

Theoretical Framework

These senior members have noted that the owners and founders of PR firms have relied on the management orientation that focuses on personal rather than organizational goals. These observations seemed to show that the life cycle of PR firms is directly dependent on the managerial orientation of their owners, as their business is person dependent. Changes, alterations, and adjustments happen at every stage of the PR firm lifecycle.

PR consultants continue to lament the fate of a number of PR firms who have died of natural causes. When change becomes necessary, everything depends on the boss's reaction to it.” The loss or absence of owner-managers from the (entrepreneurial) management of PR firms focuses on the preventive and proactive tenure of the executives. The depth and breadth of the work variants of PR professionals respond to individual skills and expertise.

The Defunct Firms: Case Studies

DELA CRUZ CO., INC

She stated that "As time passed, I began to observe (in my humble opinion) that the function of public relations was slowly losing its challenge. I began to realize that the management and thinking function of public relations began to fade (in every fall as far as my own experience is concerned).” RR” had encouraged Karen to take up communication arts even though she was originally interested in public relations.

The role of public relations is to help the organization build goodwill both internally and externally. However, he revealed that he will focus on financial relations as a major in public relations. Nor has the transformation of public relations been much more pronounced in investor relations,” he emphasized.

L. VILLANUEVA CONSULTANCY CO

But if there's any chance that conditions might look good for opening a new public relations firm, Villanueva said he wouldn't be willing to start all over again. He added that he would not be willing to risk investing in a new public relations firm because he had switched to a new business. For Villanueva, however, he thinks, "the future is bright" for local PR firms in the Philippines, although he could not say the same for the foreign companies.

Herrera went into public relations after working for more than a decade at what was then called Workday. Herrera said he will not be willing to risk investments if he is invited by the management of a PR firm that may be established. He said a new PR firm "doesn't look attractive." He personally explained that “there are so many practitioners for a very small market.

Findings, Conclusions and Recommendations Findings

Its management orientation and strategy showed negative for entrepreneurial orientation with leadership profile, vision, financial management, preferences for innovation, propensity to take risks and stewardship. The rest of the elements were negative: in the external environment, the life cycle of the organization through the organizational plan and technological changes, including adaptation/selection. However, under its management orientation and strategy there were three pluses, leadership profile, customer and financial management.

In its market and other forces, the firm suffered from an inability to keep track of its organizational plan and technological changes, including adaptation/selection. The same applies to the company's results, as the management has always been adapted to financial analysis.

Operating Firms

Internal Environment

Public relations firms believe they have resources that cannot be copied or duplicated by their competitors. To do this, public relations firms take hedging or hedging actions for the imitability of their sources. Respondents say that the culture of public relations firms has "always influenced the work situations in their companies (54.3%).

Managements of public relations firms have not allowed themselves to lag behind other business organizations. However, despite this, the regular staffing of operational public relations firms has remained small. In terms of entrepreneurial orientation, public relations firms seem to be more aware of the importance of visioning.

Conclusions and Recommendations Defunct Firms

In the life cycle of seven (07) companies or public relations firms, the average number of years that have lasted in business has turned out to be 11.7 years. The management of public relations firms must always be abreast of the steps in modern management. The life cycle of public relations firms is directly dependent on the perceived personalized management styles of their owners or leaders (presidents, CEOs or chief operating officers).

The enterprise as a type of business organization seems most ideal for PR firms. Educational institutions should use the services of PR professionals who will further enrich the profession. In some respects, the management of public relations companies must prepare a succession plan to ensure the continuity of operations.
