The third project provided additional income opportunities for farmers through the processing of value-added products and by-products derived mainly from the farming system models of the second project. Part of the suite of technologies developed for various value added products was the development/improvement of food processing equipment using the combustion generated heat. These included the improved prototype of the multi-purpose dryer which can be used for drying various Palayamanan-based products.

Likewise, an improved prototype of the continuous type rice hull carbonizer and heat recovery equipment equipped with a steam generator was also developed. In 2019, the performance of the sprinkler irrigation system was assessed through a series of field trials. Based on the test run results of the previous design, the drying bag was modified by reducing its capacity from 500 kg to 400 kg and the thickness of palay that can be accommodated to 20 cm to minimize significant difference in the moisture content (MC) of grains according to their location inside the drying bags.

The intended service area of the sprinkler irrigation system was achieved; however, further field trials are recommended to optimize the available capacity of the system. Based on the final design, the estimated cost of the system is P6,448.75, excluding the water pump. First prototype of the sprinkler system (left, Lay-flat hose) compared to the improved system (right, PE hose).

The first mega-environment (higher yield) consisted of PhilRice CES, Magarao and Hinigaran, while the lower yield environment was Sta. NSIC Rc 222 (3.80 t/ha), the variety with the highest yield, was recognized as the most adapted to the first mega-environment. PSB Rc 90 (3.19t/ha), however, was adapted to another megaenvironment and had the most unstable yield among the sites.

Moreover, PSB Rc14 and NSIC Rc90 were identified as high yielding and stable using yield stability index.

Pilot-Testing of Rice-Based Farming Systems Models (FSMs) in Climate Vulnerable Rice-Based Communities

In addition to providing opportunities to generate additional income, this project also contributes to the food and nutritional security of rice and rice farming families, protecting them from the consequences of food and energy crises due to climate change and the possible economic depression they may face. in case they are not yet prepared for ASEAN economic integration. This project aimed to develop value-added technologies for rice, by-products and other crops in the rice environment to help increase income and improve the nutritional status of members of the rice-based farming community. Value-added products for improved nutrition and income among rice-based farming households; (3) Use of stabilized rice bran (SRB) as a food ingredient for functional food products; (4) Formulation, characterization and efficacy testing of nanosilica structured biofertilizer for rice production; and (5).

Ready-to-eat (RTE) GABA rice flour with pork adobo as viand was developed through a series of product formulations and thermal treatment. Apart from having high amounts of protein, fiber, fat, ash and carbohydrates, it had comparable sensory properties to the freshly prepared GABA rice adobo (control). Shelf life evaluation showed that the RTE GABA rice flour is safe to consume for up to 11 months as shown by its acceptable pH, water activity and microbial load.

The proximate composition, total phenolic content (TPC), DPPH radical scavenging activity (DPPH-RSA), free fatty acid content (FFA), and lipase activity of the bran before and after stabilization at different temperatures and times were compared. Treatment with fish amino acid (FAA) alone was found to be the best treatment as it provided the highest numerical NPK values. Therefore, the best treatment in terms of NPK content is treatment with FAA alone and the best treatment with the highest number of bacteria was observed with treatment with FAA, P, K, silica and L.

The design of the previously developed multi-purpose (MP) dryer was further improved, leading to the production of a new prototype with 100% food grade stainless steel, including the radiator chimney that serves as its heat exchanger. A new prototype of the HRA with associated steam generator was also developed, together with a new design of the CtRH cooler. This new design of the CtRH cooler has already been tested to work satisfactorily in carbonizing chopped and dried branches of trees and is expected to work in other agricultural wastes such as rice straw, coir and coir husk.

Preliminary test results using compressed air at 1 kgf/cm2 (15 psi) as a temporary substitute for steam showed that the prototype could pump water at 225 L/h, although still below the target output of 1 m3/h. These value-added technologies developed from rice, diverse rice-based agricultural products and by-products contribute to the result of increased value, availability and utilization of rice, diverse rice-based agricultural products and by-products for better quality, safety, health, nutrition and income. Superior production of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) rice and its potential as a base ingredient for instant in.

Enriched instant am powders showed good hydration properties suitable for reconstitution and acceptable Aw and moisture content. Both carrot and sweet potato enriched instant drinks were found to be acceptable than banana at 6% concentration. Meanwhile, optimal conditions and suitable rice varieties for malting were determined for the rice malt beverage.

Rice malt with 30% soy milk, 70% sesame milk and 50% peanut milk were the most preferred formulations for rice malt based beverages. The enriched rice malt based beverages were slightly acidic, had low titratable acidity and soluble solids in the intermediate range. Rice malt beverage products are a healthy alternative to calorie-laden drinks, while the instant fortified milk is a more convenient, nutritious and shelf-stable alternative.
