1. Background
The T h a i F is h e rie s In fo r m a tio n System (THAIFIS) was e s ta b lis h e d w it h the su p p o rt and a s s is ta n c e fro m the Southeast A sian F is h e r ie s Development C enter (SEAFDEC) under th e Southeast A sian F is h e rie s In fo r m a tio n System P r o je c t (SEAFIS). Under t h i s n e tw ork, THAIFIS would c o o rd in a te w ith
SEAFDEC S e c r e ta r ia t i n c o m p ilin g and exchanging f is h e r y in f o r m a t io n b oth w it h in and o u ts id e th e r e g io n .
D u rin g 12-14 December 1984, a workshop on th e T h a i F is h e r ie s In fo rm a tio n System was o rg an ize d by th e SEAFDEC S e c r e ta r ia t i n Bangkok to fo rm u la te a lo n g term p la n f o r th e e s ta b lis h m e n t and o p e ra tio n o f a n a t io n a l f is h e r y in fo r m a tio n n e tw o rk as an in t e g r a l p a r t o f th e SEAFIS. The workshop has agreed t h a t th e L ib r a r y o f th e N a tio n a l In la n d F is h e ry I n s t i t u t e (N IF I) o f th e T h a i Departm ent o f F is h e rie s would serve as
th e N a tio n a l C enter f o r THAIFIS. C onsequently, N IF I L ib r a r y was designated as th e n a tio n a l f o c a l p o in t on t h a i f is h e r ie s i n 1985. A t p re s e n t,
th e system has s ix te e n p a r t i c i p a t i n g l i b r a r i e s . The l i s t o f th e l i b r a r i e s i s appended to t h i s p a p e r.
2. O p e ra tio n
The f i r s t a c t i v i t y c a r r ie d o u t by THAIFIS was to c o l l e c t and com pile e x is t in g l i t e r a t u r e , b o th p u b lis h e d and u n p u b lis h e d , on th e a q u a tic resources and th e f i s h e r ie s o f T h a ila n d . The b ib lio g r a p h ic c i t a t i o n system was developed f o r c o m p u te riz a tio n w it h th e a s s is ta n c e
o f M r. Ronald Needham, E d it o r i n C h ie f o f th e A q u a tic Sciences and F is h e rie s A b s tra c ts (ASFA) who served as SEAFIS P r o je c t A d v is o r a t t h a t tim e .
THAIFIS has re q u e ste d th e c o o p e ra tio n from th e p a r t i c i p a t i n g l i b r a r i e s in s u b m ittin g t h e i r a c q u is it io n s l i s t and s l ip s o f new a r r iv a l s f o r in c lu s io n i n th e THAIFIS A c q u is tio n L i s t .
However, due to b u d g e ta ry c o n s t r a in t , l im it e d p e rs o n n e l and la c k o f knowledge in c o m p u te r iz a tio n , SEAFDEC has a s s is te d N IF I i n p aying f o r a tem porary l i b r a r i a n t o w ork w it h the N IF I l i b r a r i a n and a ls o funded f o r o p e ra tin g s u p p lie s and equipm ent d u rin g th e b e g in n in g p e r io d .

The n e x t volume c o v e rin g th e years 1976 to 1980 i s s t i l l i n p r i n t . I t i s hoped t h a t a n o th e r volume o f th e b ib lio g r a p h y c o n ta in in g l i t e r a t u r e s p u b lis h e d b e fo re 1976 w i l l be com piled and p r in t e d i n th e near f u t u r e .

5. Problems
