CONTACT CULTURE AND ETHNOGENESIS IN MINDORO TO THE END OF SPANISH RULE:t>. The idyllic pattern of trade relations between Chinese merchants and the people of Mindoro was interrupted by the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. The main village of the island (which belongs to your Highness), has a minister.
Between Socol and Bulalacao, the name Manguianes is used for the pagans who live on the coast of the rivers. However, Jordana is careful to note that this practice was completely unknown in the rancherias of the interior. The coming of the Spaniards, who comprise Group C in our nomenclature, brought about radical changes in the status quo.
These were probably the Tyrones (Tiduns) who contributed to the increasing multiplication of the "people of the interior". Chau Ju-kuas' Description of the Philippines in the Thirteenth Century: A New Translation Historical Bulletin, Vol.
THE AMERICAN DEBATE ON PHILIPPINE ANNEXATION AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY,
Eyre, Jr., "Russia and the American Takeover of the Philippines", Mississippi Valley Historical ReriJiew, Vol. Vanderbilt, deputy secretary of the treasury at the time, made it clear that the Philippines were "the pickets of the Pacific." Thus began and fueled the United States' campaign for the preservation of the Philippines.
The Catholic and Protestant reaction to the acquisition of the Philippines rested on different motives that were apparently contradictory. One of the most fervent imperialist positions was taken by Senator Chauncey Depew of New York, who emphasized that the Philippines belonged to the United States by conquest and treaty rights. THE TAKAHASHI KOREKIYO MISSIONS OF 1904-1905
The interest rate must be below 5%, the price of the bonds must be in line with market conditions (subject to the Minister of Finance's approval), and the bonds must be long-term. Much to Takahashi's surprise, he was informed the next day of Schiff's identity and told that the New York banker had offered to underwrite the remaining 5. On May 4, Hayashi Komura stated that he had been informed by Takahashi of the prospect. that Japan would be able to float half the 10 million pounds in the United States, and that the Marquis of Lansdowne, the British Foreign Secretary, had expressed consi-.
In such circumstances, it is of great importance to decide at once on the general measure to be taken in the matter. 138M eiji-Twisho Zaiseishi, XVII, 58; Copies of the London and New York prospectuses, with Japanese translation, are on p. Takahashi argued that conditions were not satisfactory for such a bond issue, however, so close to the first.
Now, it informed Takahashi in late October, the market price would have to be reduced from 91% to 90% of the face amount, with a net return to the Japanese government of only 86lf2%. Now he was appointed a Special Financial Commissioner of the Imperial Japanese Government to facilitate his negotiations with the banking syndicate. In the face of such support, reluctance on the part of the authorities in Tokyo waned, and the next day Foreign Minister Komura conveyed to Hayashi the government's approval of the terms of the third bond flotation.70.
The prospects were not good, he was told, for making such a loan only in the United States and Great Britain so near the first 4lh% bonds. When Takahashi replied that he had no choice and that New York and Berlin were each willing to take a third, he was told by one of the London bankers that this would be to the detriment of Japan. Its diplomatic position was further strengthened during the war with Russia by successive invasions of the financial markets of New York and Berlin by Japanese war bonds.
The bankers were hailed as heroes and awarded medals for their services on behalf of the Japanese war effort.
THE STRUCTURE OF NATIONAL LAW-MAKING AUTHORITY IN BHUTAN
In theory there was an institutionalized reckoning of the Ponlops with Dharma Raja and Deb Raja. During this time, Wangchuk was elected as the hereditary monarch (Druk Gyalpo) of the country.12. In the first half of the twentieth century, the government of Bhutan was a pluralistic autocracy.
The source of legitimacy that sustained the political structure was procedural in the hereditary succession of the Wangchuk family. A bill can be introduced by the King or a member of the Bhutanese National Assembly. All forms of literature are a reflection of the society of which the writer is a part.

SAIR NONA FIENTJE DE FENIKS An Example of Popular Indonesian Fiction in the
Any book watcher hanging around Banteng in Jakarta, or the Padang market area can confirm this. If undertaken, the researcher would have to turn to these early literary works and periodicals. What we have in the examples of early twentieth century modern literature in Indonesia is the literary form in its infancy.
I have mentioned elsewhere7 that one of the most enduring types of literary works found in modern Indonesian literature is crime fiction based on actual events. In addition to the three short books and the syaire about the Fientje de Feniks case, he also wrote accounts of a famous murder of passion Si Riboet (1916), an account of the operations of a Chinese gang ca. At the burial of the corpse, there are a large number of mourners, and quite a few wreaths are sent, and thus the story ends.
The language used in the syair is a long series of words culled from various ·languages and dialects and is, one imagines, representative of the ·kind of colloquial language spoken in Batavia._. After they had closed the door to the room, Brinkman and Nona Fientje climbed onto the trysting bed/ What did they do. After they came out of the performance (?) they sat down again in their former seats).
All these details, if taken cumulatively, create an interesting picture of the society of that period. The very title of the book and the opening passage give the reader a false idea of what most of the eye is about. Fientje is killed halfway through and the rest of the story about Fientje is frustrated.
The most striking of these is the passage that describes the breakdown of the relationship between Brinkman and Fientje.
THE PAEKCHONG
34;UNTOUCHABLES" OF KOREA
Yet another possibility is that the Paekchong were the descendants of the descendants of captives taken during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. Moreover, even the expelled nobility might have hidden in the ranks of the Paekchong. In light of the above discussion, it is clear that finding the true origin of the Paekchong requires further scientific investigation.
Throughout most of the Yi era, Paekchong were only allowed to have personal names, not family names. Some of the Paekchongs were chosen as Yosakun, who designed coffins and horses at state funerals. The organization was also able to act as the official representative of Paekchong in trade.
This paper concludes with a brief history of efforts to improve the status of Paekchong. With the beginning of the Yi dynasty, moves were made to remove Paekchong from the chonmin class. So assimilation was quite slow, but Paekchong's position nevertheless improved, especially in the cities.
Moore of the Presbyterian Mission in Korea was a pioneer in the field of evangelism among the Paekchong. In the four years after the birth of the church, one hundred and eight adults were baptized. This was achieved through the diligent efforts of its leaders, the enthusiastic support of the Paekchongs themselves and progressive social organizations.
Before 1930, despite many difficulties, Hyongpyong-sa· · had some success in raising _Paekchong's sense of personal dignity.
A NATIVISTIC REACTION TO COLONIALISM
THE SINHALA-BUDDHIST REVIVAL IN SRI LANKA
Two phases can be distinguished in the cultural renaissance of Sinhalese society in the twentieth century. Anagarika Dharmapala, who was at the forefront of the campaign, compared the present to the past. More important is the emergence of the Sinhalese novel towards the end of the 19th century.
As Sirisena was in the field of the novel, so was John de Silva in the field of drama. Again, the emergence of the Sinhala language as a political weapon can be traced to Cumaratooga's career. A constant theme found in the literature of the period was the call to the Sinhalese to follow the example of the past.
It espoused the cause of the Sinhalese Buddhists and promised to make the Sinhalese the national Ian·. The latter proposal was regarded by the Sinhalese as a potential threat to the very existence of the Sinhalese linguistic community. In accordance with the main trends of society, the fashion of the time was a romantic archaism.
