Self-administered survey questionnaires were conducted to identify the critical factors in improving the individual's ability to achieve knowledge transfer. This thesis suggests that all five variables should be highly recognized in terms of improving the individual's ability to achieve knowledge transfer.

Statement of Problem and Significance of the Study

In conclusion, there are many factors that can influence the improvement of individual skills in AOT knowledge transfer. Additionally, there is no current study that investigates the factors that influence the extent of AOT knowledge transfer.

Research Questions

Area

It is important to study whether the main determinants really serve the transfer of knowledge in AOT or not. The researcher will focus on the effects of organizational structure (mechanical structure and organic structure), people factors (training and incentives) and information technology in improving the individual's ability to transfer knowledge in AOT.

Management Benefits

The purpose of this chapter is to provide the theoretical support for this thesis by reviewing the relevant literature related to the topic of this research. The first section discussed the perspectives of knowledge transfer, starting with definition of knowledge, knowledge management, and then job dimensions and the theories related to knowledge transfer.

Knowledge Transfer

Knowledge

In today's economy, where “the only certainty is uncertainty, knowledge is the only sure source of lasting competitive advantage” (Nonaka Knowledge is information combined with experience, context, interpretation, reflection and perspective. Polanyi indicated that tacit knowledge is difficult to convey is because it is a kind of knowledge that is not captured by language or mathematics.

Knowledge Management (KM)

Within the last 20 years, a great deal of interest has been placed on the topic of knowledge transfer (Wiig, 1997: 7). According to the knowledge transfer literature, the extent of knowledge transfer comes from improving the individual's skills.

Factors Influencing Knowledge Transfer

Organizational Structure

In contrast to the mechanistic structure, the organic structure inhibits horizontal knowledge transfer, which enables coordination among employees across the functional boundaries of the organization. In contrast to the mechanistic structure, the organic structure has the least specialization and a low level of hierarchy within the organization.

Table 2.1 Differences between Mechanistic and Organic Structure
Table 2.1 Differences between Mechanistic and Organic Structure

People Factors

In short, the organization that adapts to the demands of the environment is the most effective structure. In addition, incentives must be tailored to the special wishes and needs of the individual workplace.

Information Technology

Davenport and Prusak have stated that information technology has already become a vital part of knowledge management. With the aforementioned, many studies have established that information technology is a significant predictor that has a positive effect on knowledge management skills (Gold et al., 2001).

Empirical Studies on the Critical Factors of Knowledge Transfer

As a result, being computer literate is important in the world these days because it enables employees to acquire basic skills and knowledge and become an essential part of the workforce in any ICT equipped environment. In addition, Lee and Choi (2003) indicated that IT support is considered to be a significant factor that helps employees in the work procedures of acquisition, integration, processing, synthesis and dissemination.

Proposed Model for Analysis

Dependent Variable

The study not only found statistically significant differences in transfer systems across training and organizational types, but also found that trainees exhibited a significant weakness towards organizational transfer systems. A study on training and knowledge transfer was conducted in Thailand by Yamnill and McLean (2005) using a translated version of the LTSI, including 1,256 employees in 552 public and private organizations.

Independent Variables

Research Hypotheses

This chapter discusses general information about the AOT, including its history, business nature, AOT planning, policy and objectives. In addition, this chapter presents the independent variables (organizational structure, information technology, and people factors) that influence the improvement of an individual's ability to transfer AOT knowledge.

History

Don Mueang (International) Airport (also formerly Bangkok International Airport) is one of the airports located in Bangkok. The main airport before the opening of Don Mueang International Airport was Sa Pathum Airfield.

Business Character

AOT Expertise in Airport Operation Management

The launch of Suvarnabhumi Airport for full commercial operations on 28 September 2006 was an important strategy in increasing national competitiveness in the world arena. 2006-2008, AOT aimed for Suvarnabhumi Airport to reach 1 out of 10 international airports in the world ranking with the largest number of passengers.

Planning of AOT

Vision

In addition, AOT would like to upgrade its airport service quality to world-class level, which will enable Suvarnabhumi Airport to compete with other international airports. With free zone cargo management, cargo transportation and cargo management at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be faster, more convenient and efficient.

Mission Statement

In short, AOT will establish Thailand as a logistics center in air transport to the larger countries of the Mekong sub-region and countries in South Asia. Meanwhile, Phuket and Chiang Mai international airports will be developed to be the country's regional gateways (AOT, 2012a: 29-30).

Core Values

AOT Policy

AOT Objectives

AOT’s Organizational Structure

  • The Audit Committee
  • The Nomination Committee
  • The Remuneration Committee
  • The Corporate Governance Committee
  • The Risk Management Committee

On the basis of the Articles of Association of AOT, the Corporate Governance Committee is appointed by the Board of Directors of AOT. The risk management committee is appointed by the AOT board of directors, which consists of at least three directors (AOT, 2012a: 53).

Table 3.1 Names of AOT’s Board of Directors
Table 3.1 Names of AOT’s Board of Directors

People Factors at AOT

As for 2011, AOT (2012) defined the ongoing and additional implementation of human resource development training as follows. With more knowledge, employees will definitely increase their skills in order to increase the achievements of AOT.

Information Technology at AOT

To shape the right direction of the organization among this group, AOT created 5 development plans for information technology. It is a plan for an information technology system that deals with the management of aeronautical information in order.

Population and Sampling Procedure

Therefore, the results would not have been different if the majority of respondents came from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports only. Although some questionnaires contained some missing values, they could still be used in terms of statistical analysis.

Operational Definitions and Measurements

Operationalization of Dependent Variable

Because the majority of AOT's employees work at Don Mueang (Head Office) and Suvanarbhumi, the respondents were selected from these two areas. In April 2013, the researcher distributed 500 questionnaires to AOT the employees working at Don Mueang (Head Office) and Suvarnabhumi, and 460 questionnaires were returned.

Operationalization of Independent Variables

Additionally, demographic factors of the respondents were used in the questionnaire as shown in Table 4.4, including gender, educational attainment, jobs, tenure and rank. Descriptive statistics were used to show information about these factors, although the main focus was on factors that influence the improvement of individual skills in knowledge transfer.

In addition, factor analysis was used to test construct validity, to identify the groups of interrelated variables, to reduce the number of variables, and to confirm to the researcher which variables belonged to which group.

In addition, the validity of the questionnaire items was approved and reviewed by the dissertation advisory committee. The scale of this study was reviewed and approved by the consultant and the scales were all in English.

Reliability

The results of the reliability test for all scales used in this research are presented in Table 4.18. As a result, all the scales (improving individual skills in knowledge transfer, mechanistic structure, organic structure, training, incentives and information technology) had reliability coefficients with alpha values of .

Chapter Summary

Among all five variables proposed in the model, the greatest effect was on the improvement of the individual's ability to transfer knowledge from information technology. Therefore, information technology itself was the most important factor in the improvement of the individual's ability to.
