Abstract:

Traditional screening of soil samples for petroleum hydrocarbons using GC/MS or GC/FID can represent significant costs. Therefore, alternative screening methods that are quicker and less expensive may provide more information for use in site assessments without adding significant costs. UV-fluorescence spectroscopy has been utilized as a screening method of PAHs in sediments; however no literature is available documenting the use as a screening technique in soil samples for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH). Therefore, the objective of this study is to

determine the accuracy of UV-fluorescence spectroscopy for determining TPH by comparing field soil samples analyzed on both a GC/FID and a Turner TD-10 fluorometer with a short wavelength hydrocarbon kit. Soil samples were collected from an abandoned refinery site at Kamsack, Saskatchewan and extracted using simple shake extractions with methanol for the fluorometer and with hexane and acetone to be run on the GC/FID. Results will be compared to determine if there is a significant correlation and similar patterns portrayed by both methods to support the use of fluorometry as a screening method.
