Abstract:
Glyphosate-resistant (GR) creeping bentgrass (CB) could be marketed within the coming year. Field studies were conducted in Blacksburg, VA to evaluate several CB varieties compared to GR CB under varying weed control scenarios. An additional field study evaluated glyphosate applied 10 d prior to seeding GR CB compared to glyphosate plus diquat applied 1 d before seeding and an area that was not treated prior to seeding. Comparison varieties included L93, Penncross,
PennA4, Crenshaw, Penneagle, and Providence. Each variety was evaluated for disease incidence, insect problems, quality, texture, color, and resistance to weed infestation. GR CB has performed equivalent or better than the six comparison CB varieties. The GR CB variety is most similar in growth and appearance to L93 CB, with disease tolerance comparable to the more resistant varieties of CB. GR CB texture is less than Penn A4 but overall desirable as tested at fairway mowing
height (5/8 inch). In the fairway establishment trial, plots pretreated with glyphosate 10 days prior to seeding were 70% covered with CB in mid December following mid September seeding. At this timing, plots pretreated with glyphosate plus diquat 1 day prior to seeding had 30% CB cover and nontreated plots had 1% CB cover. In mid May, both treated plots were completely covered with CB and nontreated plots had less than 15% CB coverage.
