Abstract:

The herbicides sulfosulfuron and bispyribac-sodium have activity on both annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) and roughstalk bluegrass (Poa trivialis L). Field experiments were conducted in the fall of 2002 and 2003 at Adelphia, New Jersey to investigate the soil residual activity of sulfosulfuron and bispyribac on three cool-season turfgrass species. Sulfosulfuron (34 and 67 g/ha) and bispyribac (148 and 297 g/ha) were applied to an established Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) stand at 6, 4, 2, and 1 week prior to overseeding. One week before overseeding, the Kentucky bluegrass was controlled with a non-selective herbicide spray to more accurately determine emergence of desired seedlings. Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L. ‘L-93’), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. ‘Pizzazz’), and Kentucky bluegrass ‘Kenblue’ were verti-seeded into treated plots in early September. Ground cover and vigor reduction for each species were evaluated. Data from 2002 suggest that these turfgrass species can be safely overseeded one week after a bispyribac application and two weeks after a sulfosulfuron application. In a separate study, sulfosulfuron (11 to 34 g/ha) and bispyribac (74 to 148 g/ha) were applied to bare ground in early September. These treatments significantly reduced the levels of annual bluegrass germination during the fall as compared to the untreated check. Data from 2002 and 2003 will be presented for both studies.
