A Synthesis of the Body of Knowledge Related to Spiritual Well-Being in the Context of Thai Society

Received: September, 2011 Accepted: December, 2011

Abstract

This study attempted to synthesize body of knowledge of spiritual well-being in the context of Thai society and analyze spiritual well-being development methods for Thais by synthesizing from research reports of researchers, thesis and independent studies of graduate students,

and dissertations of doctoral students from higher education institutions and other units, during 2000-2010. In this study, 35 research studies were used as the sample. Qualitative data was analyzed and synthesized, using content analysis technique and interpretative approaches.

In addition, the body of knowledge status was concluded based on epistemology of pragmatism.

Results of research revealed: 1) the definition has been defined in several and different ways according to paradigm, methodology and social contexts, therefore universal definition for all cannot be given. 2) the factors can be divided into 2 groups, i.e., a) internal factors which involved biosocial factors, past experience, personality, Buddhist practice and depression, and b) external factor which involved socialization, social support, environment and health status. 3) the

construction of measuring instruments and assessment could be done in several ways and different methods for assessment should be applied. 4) the development methods could be divided into 2 levels, i.e., a) individual level which was spiritual well-being development methods of children, youths and adults, and b) social level which was spiritual well-being development methods of schools and organizations.

Keywords:synthesis of body of knowledge, spiritual well-being, spirituality, epistemology
