Abstract:

Winter wheat is the most important crop in direct seed and conventional tillage systems in the Palouse. Winter wheat variety differences are not well defined in tillage systems. We compared variety performance of winter wheat in a replicated conventional tillage (CT) and no-till (NT) trials near Genesee, Idaho 2002-2004.

Across 15 varieties, yield was lower in NT than CT in 2002, due to over winter rodent feeding in NT. In 2003, yields were not different between tillage systems and averaged 5380 kg ha-1 in CT and 5170 kg ha-1 in NT. Other agronomic characteristics such as plant height, grain test weight, grain protein, seed weight, total crop biomass, and harvest index were not different between tillages. Although, more heads counted in NT than in CT. There was no significant interaction of

tillage and variety and 9 of 15 varieties yielded less in NT than CT. ‘Rohde’,

‘Mohler’, and ‘Lambert’ were highest yielding in CT, while Rod, ‘Hubbard’, and

‘Temple’ were highest in NT. In 2002, Rod was highest yielding variety in NT.

However, Lambert was second highest in 2002, but lowest in 2003 indicating a variable variety response across tillage and environments. Spring wheat was also tested and had higher grain quality traits in NT and similar yields between tillage treatments. More variety performance results are needed in many environments to find consistent tillage responses.
