A trip to the supermarket has now become an exercise in psychological warfare.

Shopkeepers know that filling a store with the smell of 41 baked bread makes people feel hungry and persuades them to buy more food than they intended. Stocking the most expensive products 42 eye level helps them sell faster than cheaper but less visible competitors.

Researchers on customer behavior are now investigating how “swarm intelligence”

(that is, how social animals like ants or bees behave in a crowd) can be used to influence 43 people buy. The idea is that, if a certain product is seen to be popular, shoppers are 44 to choose it too. With the help of modern technology, some

supermarkets are now able to keep customers 45 about what others are buying. As a customer walks past a 46 of goods in one of these supermarkets, a screen on the shelf will tell him how many people currently in the same store have chosen that particular product. As it turns out, such a “swarm intelligence” model increases sales 47 the need to give people discounts. The reason is simple: it gives shoppers the satisfaction of knowing that they bought the “ 48 ” product—that is, the one everyone else bought.

The psychology that works in 49 stores is just as powerful on the Internet.

Online retailers such as Amazon are good at telling shoppers which products are popular with like-minded customers. Even in the 50 of your home, you can still be

Ernest Hemingway was born in 1899 in a small Illinois town. When World War I began, the young Hemingway, eager for experience, tried to join the army. He was rejected, however, and instead served in Italy as a Red Cross ambulance driver.

Hemingway’s novel A Farewell to Arms was inspired by the horrors he witnessed during the war.

In the 1920s, Hemingway became the voice of the lost generation that came of age in the spiritually empty years following the First World War. Like many other writers and artists, Hemingway moved to Paris’s Left Bank and contributed to the great mix of personalities that made this district legendary. A Moveable Feast, written much later in life, captures the color of this time.

In the early 1950s, Hemingway won both a Pulitzer and the Nobel Prize in Literature for The Old Man and the Sea. In the years following, his literary output lessened considerably, owing to alcoholism, straitened financial circumstances, and depression. In 1961 he committed suicide with a shotgun blast to the head.

Hemingway’s influence on modern writing cannot be overstated. His direct and unemotional style has been copied by countless authors worldwide. In fact, there are far more Hemingway-styled stories out there than he himself ever wrote. Hemingway also influenced our notion of how a writer should appear. Instead of the writer as a sensitive, urban aesthete, he left the image of a tough, hard-drinking, adventurous man of letters. This has arguably been as influential as his work itself.
