Conditions and Procedures

The university council concluded in its first meeting for the academic year 1442 dated 14/02/1442 corresponding to 01/10/2020, relative to the approval of the conditions and procedures regarding academic books presented for academic promotion (original-work or translated) and have decided on the following :

The council approves the conditions and procedures relative to academic books presented for academic promotion (original-work or translated) based on the following criteria, derived from article (20/20) from the bylaws of University and Higher Education Council

Academic Book Definition:

Literary, scientific or arts-related field of knowledge regardless of impact, type, expressiveness or classification, and has a single book cover, a title and exceeds 4 pages.

a) General Guidelines for Original/Translated Academic Books

1. Book contents must not go in contrast with the religious, social, political, and general values of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s.

2. The book must be within the field of major, adds academic value and takes into consideration all academic and technical criteria, and the scientific council retains the rights to dismiss the book review if it does not meet the minimum requirements.

3. Retaining common academic standards, clear methodological writing, and linguistic integrity.

4. Proper use of curriculums, academic tools and resources.

5. If the book is not reviewed by an approved entity specified by the university’s scientific council, it will be forwarded to the college’s scientific council.

6. The decision of the scientific council includes calculation of points to meet the minimum requirements for academic promotion or at least be used as reference.

b) Authorship Requirements

1. Applicant must be the author (Not an editor, a reviewer, a coordinator or alike)

2. The book’s theoretical content of the author’s must be 10% minimum including diagrams, visual data and charts.

3. Author’s individual participation in the book must be 30%

minimum or equivalent in the book’s total production.

4. Book must be original-work and not derived from author’s previous works or others.

5. The book must not be older than 10 years since publication when applying for a promotion.

6. The text-based content in Arabic books must be 80 pages minimum in theoretical majors, and 100 pages for science major.

7. The text-based content in non-Arabic books must be 60 pages minimum for theoretical majors, and 80 pages for science majors.

c) Translation Requirements

1. The translator must provide a written consent from the owner of the intellectual property (author or publisher) for the approval of book translation and publishing.

2. Obtaining a translation approval by the academic section, or the Translation Center unless the translation is a

university research project.

3. The translated book must be recent and no older than 10 years from its initial date of publishing, this excludes original works in the field of major or produced based on

the recommendation of the scientific council or the university’s Translation Center.

4. The translator or the translation participants/colleagues must provide a consent form (if the book has multiple participants) when applying for promotion.

5. The presented book must be the latest edition when applying for a translation approval.

6. The text-based content in non-Arabic books must be 60 pages minimum for theoretical majors, and 80 pages for scientific books.

d) Technical Criteria for Academic Books (Original or Translated)

Author presents both an electronic and paper copies of the book to be reviewed for general and technical specifications.

First: General Specifications Book parts 17/24cm

Book width 12.5cm and 19cm in depth (length)

Pages are numbered at the bottom-middle of the page.

Arabic alphabetical or Latin (English) alphabetical ordering Chapters/units must not be titled on separate individual pages.

Graphs, Charts and Visual Data: Properly indexed, and organized with serial numbers throughout chapters/units.

Second:

A. Arabic Academic Books Format: 14cm (Simplified Arabic)

Charts and comments on diagrams: 12cm (Simplified Arabic), chart titles and comments (bold).

References: Arabic 12cm (Simplified Arabic), non-Arabic 9cm (Times New Roman).

Tail headings: 10cm (Simplified Arabic) if used at the bottom of the page.

Page numbering: 12cm at the bottom-middle of the page.

B. English Academic Books

Format: 12cm (Times New Roman)

Charts and comments on diagrams: 9cm (Times New Roman), chart titles and comments: (Bold)

References: 9cm (Times New Roman).

Page numbering: 10cm at the bottom-middle of pages.

All writing conventions relative to references, contents and writing methodology must be followed.
