Primary function
Instruct and supervise students in clinical sites as per their program requirements.
Job duties
§ Demonstrate competent practice
Know, understand, and follow the accepted standards, laws, and rules regulating the practice, and function within the scope of practice. Be responsible and accountable for practice based on, and limited to, the scope of instructor’s education, demonstrated competence, and experience. Obtain instruction, supervision, and consultation as necessary before implementing new or unfamiliar techniques or practices. Be responsible for maintaining current knowledge in broad and/or specialized areas. Respect client right to privacy by protecting confidential information.
§ Interface with clinical agency/unit
Be familiar and comply with agency policies and procedures. Recruit, manage, and assign students. Visit and troubleshoot student’s issues. Students have specific objectives for their clinical experience, and are required to adhere to the standards, policies, and encourage nurses to communicate immediately with faculty regarding any student performance issue. Communicate with nurse manager/clinical director on a regular basis, including an end-of-the-rotation communication.
§ Orient to the course.
Review student learning objectives, course syllabus, and textbooks. Confirm student assignments and congruence with theory content. Review grading policies and student handbook, including essential qualifications for
undergraduate students. Provide feedback about adequacy of site in allowing students to meet course objectives. Review process and content of student evaluations of teaching effectiveness.

Perform all reasonable assigned tasks as designated by the course coordinator to provide students opportunity to meet course objectives and program essentials.
Promote cooperation and communication among the clinical site staff, students, faculty, and other team members.
§ At clinical site.
Direct, instruct, and guide students in the clinical setting:
Assist students in collecting pertinent objective and subjective data regarding client health status.
Teach. Engage students in comprehensive, individualized instruction in the observation, assessment, decision-making, and health teaching of clients, including the maintenance of client health or prevention of illness or disease. Facilitate development of student’s critical thinking, technical, and professional skills while maintaining client and student safety and client confidentiality. Supervise the administration of medications. Delegate selected functions to students in accordance with their education, credentials, and demonstrated competency.
Relate assigned readings to student clinical assignments. Provide students with written instructions for what to do in case of injury or illness in the clinical setting.
Participate in lecture course as needed.
Monitor student performance. Direct students to be responsible and accountable for their behaviors in the clinical setting. Communicate with students and course coordinator regarding student progress. Refer students to college services as necessary. Grade written assignments and return to students in timely manner.
Hold student pre- and post-clinical conferences at the end of each day/week.
Publish and hold weekly office hours for students, during which two mandatory meetings are held with individual students for the purposed of discussing the formal written midterm and final evaluations. Hold instructor conversations regarding student performance in private.

Assist in instructing campus lab skills sessions, scheduled weekly or on a one-time- only basis for review and/or testing of new clinical skills.

Lead the seminar, beginning with a review of policies, procedures and communication within clinical group.
Brief Description of Undergraduate Courses Taught:
1 MEDICAL SURGICAL 1 (1610 311)
This course provides the student with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes that would enable them to provide high quality nursing management for Medical-Surgical patients in both general medical and surgical wards. This is in addition to the different therapeutic modalities used for both medical and surgical patients.
However, the student is expected to integrate knowledge derived from other courses taken previously or simultaneously.
The course also focuses on the application of nursing process and utilization of the concept of self-care in providing comprehensive nursing management for medical and surgical patients with special consideration to the maintenance of patients’ safety throughout care and promotion of home care through discharge plan.
2 MEDICAL SURGICAL 2 (1610-312)
The course provides the student with further in-depth knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for high quality nursing management for Medical-Surgical patients in specialized medical and surgical wards, as well as emergency room, operating room and recovery room and day surgery. This is in addition to the different therapeutic modalities used for both medical and surgical patients. However, the student is encouraged to integrate knowledge derived from other courses taken previously or simultaneously.
The course also focuses on the application of nursing process and utilization of self-care concepts in providing comprehensive nursing management for medical and surgical patients with special consideration to the maintenance of patients’ safety throughout care and promotion of home care through discharge plan.
3 PEDIATRIC NURSING (1610-431)
The course provides theory and practice essential for the nursing management of children in both health and sickness. Emphasis is placed on normal growth and development of children from infancy through adolescence.
Health promotions, prevention of illness are greatly emphasized. Clinical experience includes observation of children in nursery school. It involves also nursing care of the sick children in the Medical and Surgical Pediatric wards.
4 MATERNAL AND CHILD NURSING (1610-211)
The course provides the learners the fundamental concepts about normal pregnancy, labor and delivery, post-partum period and delivery of care to newborn. This course further provides ideas related to family planning and responsible parenthood knowledge, understanding and proficiency (KUB) in the provision of examination, suturing and
intravenous therapy.
