Creating eBay Business
Using a program like Excel, you can create a basic spreadsheet that lists the key information you need when purchasing an item. Description A narrative area where you can add any information about the item, especially information you'll want to use when listing the item. Using Accounting Assistant, you can easily transfer eBay and PayPal transaction data from eBay tools like Selling Manager and Blackthorne directly into the QuickBooks account you've set up for your eBay business.
For example, eBay's free Turbo Lister program provides an optional field you can use for inventory information, as shown in Figure 3-4. You'd be surprised how much information you can get from other eBay sellers. To streamline the photo-taking process, dedicate the space you need - in accordance with the type and size of items you sell - and leave the "studio" intact so you can quickly launch subsequent items.
Use natural lighting, light sticks, and other light sources that you can set up and leave in place once you determine the lighting is satisfactory, as shown in Figure 3-9. If you can designate a person to handle these issues, you will free up your time to facilitate the sale. Well, it's good if you sell goods that have a standard weight and size that you can plan in advance based on your packaging needs.
Creating Super Listings
Click in the topic description area where you want the bet placed and click the name of the saved bet you want. In the Turbo Lister window, select the listing(s) you want to duplicate from the grid in the right pane. To select non-contiguous items in the list, hold down CTRL and click the items you want selected.
In the Select Folder to Save Entry dialog box, click the folder where you want to save the entry. You can create new folders in the folder list, shown in the left pane of the Turbo Lister window. Click the folder in which you want to create a subfolder and click New Folder in the context menu. Make any changes to the offer in the Edit Item window (see 'Change offers' below) and click Save.
To select non-adjacent lists in the grid, hold down the CTRL key and click the items you want. In the Multiple Values window (similar to the Edit Element/Create New Element windows), change all available attributes (some attributes, such as Category, cannot be changed if the selected elements do not have the same selections). Open the folder in the folder list that contains the listings you want to upload to eBay.
Managing Your eBay Business
If you buy in bulk, you can use auction management software to quickly create a list from a previously created list (or templates as it's called. Both Selling Manager Pro and Auctiva (see Figure 5-10) offer features that provide inventory details and create notifications when the quantity drops to a certain level (meaning you're selling!). To view your seller dashboard, you can click the links in the My eBay My Account sidebar or the Selling Manager/Selling Manager Pro Summary pages.
You can set Selling Manager Pro (and other auction management programs) to automatically relist unsold items (see “Automatically Relist Items” later in the chapter) and make changes to your listing that can increase your selling success (see “Changing list for Success" . QuickFacts). In eBay stores, you can maintain a constant supply of goods for sale by selecting goods. You can set the limits you want using links in sales forms, such as the Sell Your Item form, or the forms used in Turbo Lister or in the site settings in My eBay.
If the buyer doesn't pay, you can file an unpaid item dispute to notify eBay of the problem. At eBay Motors, if you have a dispute with a buyer regarding a transaction for a vehicle, you may receive negative feedback that will be evaluated by a third party, NetNeutrals. You can do this immediately after a sale if the buyer is no longer registered on eBay or if you and the buyer mutually agree to reverse the transaction.).
Setting Up an eBay Store
In the Select a store name text field, write the name you want for your store. Several store features you can configure or change to customize your store are covered in “Customizing Your Store” later in this chapter. To access the toll-free number, click on Manage Your Store in My eBay or from the store's website.
You can access this page from a link on your store's home page or from other pages on eBay. On the Edit Basic Information page, you can change the name of the store, its description, and add a logo using one of several methods, as shown in Figure 6-6. In either case, click Save Settings at the bottom of the respective pages to change the store theme.
CHANGE THE ORDER OF CATEGORIES You can change how categories are listed as they appear in your store. Click Create Promotion Box under Promotion Box Location 3 or 4 to create a custom box under your Store's navigation bar. Read the five definitions at the top of the page to understand the possible elements you can add to a custom page (see "Adding Promotional Boxes to Your Store" for more information on the first element).
Selling for Others
On the eBay Trading Assistant Program page, click Trading Assistant Requirements And Sign-Up on the left sidebar. On the Registration page, click Trading Assistant Terms and Conditions on the left sidebar to review the terms of the program. Click Edit your manager profile on the left sidebar of the Trading Assistant home page.
On the Trading Assistant Program page, click the Trading Assistant Login in the left sidebar. On the Trading Assistant home page, in the left sidebar, see a list of topics covering different aspects of being a TA. From the main page of the Trading Assistant for the current AT, click Trading Assistant Toolkit And Logos.
From the Trading Assistant Program page (Site Map | Trading Assistant Program), click Trading Assistant Requirement And Sign-Up on the left sidebar. On the next Merchant Assistant program page, click Registered eBay Download Site Terms and Conditions on the left sidebar. When you're ready to apply, log into your TA account and click Edit your guide profile on the sidebar of the Trading Assistant home page.
Using eBay Sales Outlets
Get as much information as you can about the history and condition of the car or vehicle, tires, etc. On the eBay Cars home page, under Selling on the eBay Cars heading, click Sell Your Item. The more you can make your vehicle look like a bargain, the more activity you will have.
Half.com is the place to sell books, music, movies (DVD or VHS), video games and gaming systems. Click on Half.com from the footer links at the bottom of the eBay home page. If you are selling an item and know your ISBN or UPC or production item number, you can use the Quick Sell technique.
Half.com includes an inventory management page where you can edit, delete or suspend items or make other changes. Kijiji is where you can post an online ad for the city closest to you. But if you want to post more than 25 ads, you can contact Kijiji and get permission.
Applying eBay to Nonprofits
A seller registers with eBay Giving Works to sell a product and agrees to give a percentage of the proceeds (from 10 to 100 percent, stated in the item description) to a nonprofit that the seller supports. MissionFish handles the distribution of the money, so you can be sure that the donation goes to the nonprofit. The percentage donated to the nonprofit will appear in the description of the item for most items.
To find eBay's nonprofit auction sites, click on Giving Works at the end of the category sidebar on the home page. To get to Giving Works, click on Giving Works at the bottom of the Shop Your Favorite Categories list on the home page. Typically, paid staff take care of the day-to-day operations of the organization while volunteers carry out the mission.
Ensuring that these needs are met and that volunteers feel wanted and valued is an important part of the organization's success. The image among donors, volunteers and those being helped is essential to the success of the organization. Finally, if those served are uncomfortable with the nonprofit's image, they will stay away, making it less likely that the organization's purpose will be served.
