Course Title : Communication Skills (COMM 100) Course Description:
This course on communication skills introduces students to the concepts and theories in the field of human communication. It provides them with the fundamental skills in the areas of intrapersonal and interpersonal communication, The course also encourages students to make effective use of the above skills and strategies in day-to-day activities as well as in the professional environment. This is achieved by employing innovative methods that are based on comprehensive and multi-faceted training and evaluation programs.
Aims and Goals:
1. Understanding human communication, its theories and the role it plays in the success of individuals in the personal, social and professional environment.
2. Acquiring skills to communicate effectively with oneself and with others in social and professional settings.
3. Applying successfully communication skills in various contexts.
Objectives of the Course:
The course is designed to enable learners to achieve the following specific objectives. The Student should be able to :
1. Understand the basic process of effective human communication.
2. Express one's ideas effectively.
3. Acquire the necessary skills that can help in setting objectives and planning for the future.
4. Develop active listening skills.
5. Understand the nature of verbal communication. Its barriers and how to put it to good use.
6. Understand the nature of non-verbal communication, its roles and how to use it effectively.
7. Understand one-on-one communication and how it can be improved and used effectively . 8. Manage conflicts Effectively .
9. Learn the concept of communication in small groups and factors that affect it.
10. Communicate within a small group and maintain team spirit.
11. Acquire decision-making and problem-solving skills.
12. Understand the nature of public communication and to plan accordingly.
13. Develop presentations skills.
14. Improve writing skills, reports, articles and official letters . 15. Prepare a good curriculum vita.
