Guidelines avoiding miscommunication

Ex: You and your cousin agreed to meet in SM at a certain time (12nn) on

Sunday.

There is a possible

problem here and the solution is to Give the exact or specific place

2. Avoid Unexplained Silence

The solution about this is the best thing to do when this happens is to tell

someone.

3. When you are angry, hold your tongue or else you will blurt out something you may end up regretting later

It will show that you are sincerely committed to relay your message and committed to listen

Always bear in mind that anything that you have uttered while you are under these negative emotions

cannot be taken back anymore

10 years of regrets is never better than 10 mins of refrain

4. Always establish eye contact

Avoid emotional outbursts at all cost

5. The tone of the one’s voice is effective in conveying a clear

message

A caring, affectionate tone easily establishes a positive atmosphere between you and the listener

Remember: It is not what you say that has the most impact but how you

deliver the message that matters more.

Listening and Responding Skills

As a listener you have to listen and respond effectively by doing the following;

Skills To Learn for Effective Communication

A. Prepare

Prepare yourself to listen by shutters out distractions and focusing on what the speaker has too say

B. Listen and Clarify

If you were not able to understand the message, you may ask for some clarification or elaboration of his/her explanation

C. Aknowledge

Take time to communicate with the speaker that you are able to get his/her explanation.

D. Maintain your posture

Ex: Teacher - Student relationship (not in a romantic way haha) The teacher should appreciate students insight by giving an expression such as: great! or very Good!

One way of showing interest in the speaker’s ideas is by adopting a relaxed posture, facing the speaker at an appropriate distance.

This way the speaker will get energized

E. Establish Effective Eye Contact

Establishing eye contact with speaker is a means of expressing an interest to listen to his/her topic.

However, in some cultures, direct eye contact may be considered an offense or an act of aggression (University of Sydney, 2011)
