Listening and Responding Skills
As a listener you have to listen and respond effectively by doing the following;
Skills To Learn for Effective Communication
A. Prepare
Prepare yourself to listen by shutters out distractions and focusing on what the speaker has too say
B. Listen and Clarify
If you were not able to understand the message, you may ask for some clarification or elaboration of his/her explanation
C. Aknowledge
Take time to communicate with the speaker that you are able to get his/her explanation.
D. Maintain your posture
Ex: Teacher - Student relationship (not in a romantic way haha) The teacher should appreciate students insight by giving an expression such as: great! or very Good!
One way of showing interest in the speaker’s ideas is by adopting a relaxed posture, facing the speaker at an appropriate distance.
This way the speaker will get energized
E. Establish Effective Eye Contact
Establishing eye contact with speaker is a means of expressing an interest to listen to his/her topic.
However, in some cultures, direct eye contact may be considered an offense or an act of aggression (University of Sydney, 2011)
