Course Description:

This is a three hour credit course that builds on "Listening and Speaking I". It is intended to give students the opportunity to learn and practice different listening and speaking skills. Throughout the course, students are exposed to different authentic listening selections and introduced to a wide range of listening tasks developed to reflect natural language. The course is also designed to deal with a variety of speaking activities including role plays, skits, discussions, debates, and presentations.

Course Objectives:

The course aims at the following:

- developing students' skills in understanding and using conversational English to prepare them for their major courses in both literature and linguistics courses.

- encouraging students to talk and converse in English.

- improving students’ analytical and critical thinking.

- developing students’ overall fluency in the English language.

- developing listening and speaking skills that are necessary for students to function successfully in a university class.

- expending students’ vocabulary in selected areas and encouraging them to use it - helping students to communicate more effectively and interactively.

- helping students to gain confidence communicating in English.

- helping students to recognize and understand different accents of native and non-native English speakers.

- developing presentation and discussion skills

The following chapters are to be covered in LANE 214 course for Fall semester 2008-09:

- Chapter 1: Small Talk – Not Deep, But Important

- Chapter 2: High-Tech Communication – A Curse or a Blessing?

- Chapter 4: Academic Dishonesty – How Common Is Cheating?

- Chapter 5: Exploring American Culture – McDonaldization of the World?

- Chapter 6: Medical Ethics – Should Doctors Ever Lie?

- Chapter 8: Marketing Techniques – Are We Really Influenced?

Course Assessment:

Listening Log --- 5

Presentation 1 (Free Topic) --- 10

Presentation 2 (Literature Topic) --- 15

Presentation 3 (Linguistic Topic)--- 15

Midterm (Listening) --- 10

Role-play --- 20

Final Exam --- 25

______________________________________________________________ Total 100 Attendance policy:

- Students are expected to be punctual and attend all classes.

- If a student arrives after the scheduled beginning time for class, it will be put down in the attendance sheet as Late (3 times Late = 1 absence).

- Being absent for more than 20% of allocated course time means that the student will receive a DN (denied from final exam) grade which is equivalent to an F.
