Department of Field Crops

This sector occupies a total area of 13 ha planted with different field crops (millet, Sudan grass, sunflower, sorghum, alfalfa, maize). The sector’s objectives are:

I. Yield evaluation under different cultivation methods.

II. Production of better improved varaities suitable for the Western region conditions.

The agronomy sector uses the three types of irrigation; i.e. pivot, drip and surface irrigation for forage, millets and Sudan grass respectively. Both depth of plowing and addition of organic substances are being evaluation in each experiment.

Horticulture Department:

ARS includes several experiments on several types of horticulture crops aiming to evaluate the suitable crops for the region. The allocated areas for each one of groups are:

a- Fruit crops Branch:

- The area allocated for these crops is 21.7 ha planted with different varieties of date palm trees, grapes, figs, pomegranates, mangoes, guava and lemons.

The undergoing research in the station includes studies on varieties of date palm from different sources among which from Madinah Al- Munawwara variates (Rothana, Rabiah, Agwah Madinah and Sukarih Yanbuh). Al Hassa palms include (Alkhalass, Hilaly, Ghor Alhassa and Khonizy Al-hassa) for Al-Kasim (Barhi, Sabakah, Sukari and Hilwah El- Goof) this beside varieties from Riyadh (Maktomi, Nabut Sief, Sellag and Khadary). Varieties from Hada Al-Sham are Mashkook and Meskawy. Along with that the imported planted varieties are: (Madgol from USA, Zaghlool and Samani from Egypt).

Research experiments proved the success of these varieties under ARS conditions with early fruit ripening of one month on average for both early and late fruiting varieties.

As for grapes; research experiments succeeded in establishing a grape orchard (from El-Taif varieties) with original ripening during March meaning that it ripened five months earlier than in its original habitat (El-Taif). Studies are still underway for Egyptian grape varieties (Romi-red and Bennaty).

Fig trees include a group of five years old orchard of concordia variety (which proved to be successful) beside a group from Egypt (Aboudy, Khramany, Aswan White, Black Mesh and Turkish Brown).

The current research in fruit tree branch of ARS at Hada Al-sham aims at:

I. Growth and yield experiments on date palms and its best receptivity.

II. The best h Ma cà r?ng nhí freewebtown.com/gaigoitanbinh/index.html orticulture practices of date palms for the Western Region conditions.

III. Carry on studies on few tropical fruits (Mango, Pomegranate and also figs).

IV. Yield studies on fig and grape orchards.

b- Vegetable Crops Branch:

The allocated area for these research studies is seven hectares. This includes several vegetable crops (capsicum, eggplant, sweet corn, cauliflower, potato, cabbage, onion, different tomato varieties, watermelon, lettuce and few other local crops. These researches in ARS at Hada Al-Sham aim to:

I. Study few anti-transpirant materials and their effect on water loss and growth in potato under Western region

conditions.

II. Carry on physiological studies on tomato production and fruit quality under Western region conditions.

III. To study the effect of heat and drought stresses on tomato seed germination along with the evaluation of salinity effect on growth.

IV. Evaluation of vegetable crop production (tomato, capsicum, cucumber and lettuce) under protected agriculture systems.

V. To study the fertilization levels needed for vegetable crops (eggplant and seedless watermelons).

VI. To study tissue culture methods used for different vegetables along with yield evaluation.

VII. Development of few new strains suitable for Hada Al-Sham environmental conditions and Western Region in general.

VIII. Run special genetical improvement programs (through breeding programs) to produce varieties with high drought, heat and salinity tolerance.

IX. Modification of agriculture methods to increase the yield of vegetable crops.

c- Flowericulture and ornamental horticulture branch:

The allocated area to this branch in ARS at Hada Alsham is almost 1.5 ha directed towards cultivation and selection of suitable ornamental plants, shrubs, and bulbous ornamentals (Ma cà r?ng nhí

and gradients) beside planting shade and indoor pot plants. This is accomplished in greenhouses.

- The current research aims at:

I. To study the water use in newly introduced varieties of cut-flowers to the Western region.

II. To study rational-water-use in the production of tuberose.

III. To study the techniques of prolonging shelf-life of cut-flowers.

IV. To study the best fertilization levels needed for foliage and flower growth and quality of cut flowers.

V. Ameliorating the performance of tuberose cut-flowers as a newly introduced cut flower in the region.

VI. Adaptation and acclimatization of ornamental flowering bulbs suitable for the Western region.
