Computational Biochemistry (Bioc 392), Practical Session Course Content

Student will take some hints in using Office programs; Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Internet Explorer. Then, Topics will be listed and presented to student to choose and present a seminar individually.

On the first week we will talk about the content of the course and the programs that will be discussed.

The following table will detail the topics will be discussed week by week.

3 1. ChemDraw: the users, option, menu, possibilities of the program 2. How to draw and form Amino Acids, Peptide bond, simple sugar,

polypeptides and proteins

4 Task1: Draw the following peptides and label the peptide bond with different color:

• Tryptophyl – prolyl – valyl – cystelyl – glycelyl – alanilyl – histidyl – serilyle – cysteine

• Glyceyl – arginyl – tyrosiyl – tryptophayl – leuciyl – isoleuciyl – valine Task2: Draw the following non-standard amino acids:

• Dopamine

• GABA

• Histamine

• Cyanoalanine

• Serotonine

5 Task3: Calculate the molecular weight of the following:

• Cholesterol, Squalene, Antinomycin, Stearic acid, Glutathione, Task4: Draw with illustration the Formation of cystine

Task5: Draw with illustration the high energy compound and mark the high energy bond; ATP, NADH, FADH and NADP

6 Task6: Draw the following oligonucleotides and label the phosphodiester bond with different color:

• A-G-C-A-A-G

• T-T-C-C-A-C-G-A

7 Examination on ChemDraw. Student will Draw and illustrate more that one structure and they will be able to manipulate with the structures they already studied on previous courses

Final Seminar: all student must present an advance powerpoint presentation illustrates the a biochemical topic with the help of ChemBioDraw tools.

Grades will be given as follow:

20% attendance

30% seminar

30% exams

20% Home works
