Course description:

The entire course should provide the predoctoral student fundamental and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of orthodontic diagnosis, evaluation and treatment with respect to craniofacial and dental growth and development. Concepts of diagnosis and treatment planning are presented to give an insight for patients needs.

This orthodontic course is designed in the curriculum so as to follow the guidelines for predoctoral orthodontics developed by the American Association of Dental Schools. These guidelines, which are included in current accreditation standards, suggest that an appropriate curriculum should include instructions at four levels:

1. Basic growth and development

2. Applied growth and development, including diagnostic procedures 3. Biomechanics and basic orthodontic techniques

4. Clinical orthodontics, including adjunctive procedures for adults and treatment procedures of limited complexity for children

(3)

Course Objectives:

The course is directed towards achieving specific educational goals. The predoctoral student should:

1. Understand the significance of the major concepts of facial growth and development.

He/she should be able to recognize the importance of coordinating treatment timing as it coincide with facial and somatic growth.

2. Be able to recognize and evaluate the proper eruption pattern of a given patient as it relate to his chronologic and skeletal age.

3. Be able to understand the different dimensional changes in arch length and width during the transition from primary to mixed and onto the permanent dentition.

4. Be able to perform and evaluate space analysis for the mixed and permanent dentition as part of a diagnostic procedure during treatment planning.

5. Be able to understand the etiology of orthodontic problems.

6. Understand the fundamentals of orthodontics removable appliances.

7. Should have knowledge about the biology of tooth movement and full understanding of the applied forces to the teeth. Also be able to identify problem during orthodontic treatment to ensure healthy bone, gingival and periodontal ligament.

8. Be able to understand basic mechanics of tooth movement and it’s relevance in clinical application.

Learning resources:

„ Lectures that covers the outlined topics in the textbook will be presented by the assigned instructor to each topic (proffit, contemporary orthodontics).

„ Laboratory sessions usually follows the lectures. Most of the laboratory projects are requested to relate to the lecture and therefore must be accomplished on schedule (lab manual).

Course requirements and grading:

1. Attendance and participation are mandatory.

2. The evaluation will be based on student’s proficiency during the semester. The final score and grade will be (according to year and course #) an addition of:

a. All laboratory project grades b. Midterm exam

(4)

c. Final exam

d. Attendance and professionalism

V-Instructor reflection on the course

Strength:

This course provide basic understanding and integration of the etiology of malocclusion and the biological and mechanical principles in orthodontics. It provides generous information to the students to be able to use it in clinical orthodontics.

Weakness:

The laboratory part of the course needs to be refined to exclude one acrylization session and some components of the orthodontic appliance that are not commonly used. Also some important components need enough lab time to be practiced enough by the students.

Plans for future changes:

We are now reviewing and refining the laboratory manual so that more time will be dedicated to the components of removable appliance that are commonly used and excluding those are not used commonly in clinical orthodontics.
