Professor Rifat Hamoudi was recently elected to serve as a member of the
“National Strategic Framework for SARS-CoV2 Virus (COVID-19) Genetic Sequence Surveillance in United Arab Emirates” committee with members from other UAE universities and government institutions.
COVID-19 continues to have a devastating effect on the economy and education worldwide. Prof Hamoudi’s team has produced timely multidisciplinary research, carried out at the University of Sharjah through applying advanced bioinformatics and engineering mathematics on transcriptomic data, obtained from COVID-19 infected patients’ material. The research identified a set of novel biomarkers that correlate with COVID-19 severity.
This research resulted in two key publications in World Journal of Gastroenterology (https://www.wjgnet.com/1007-9327/full/v27/i21/2850.htm) and Frontiers in Immunology (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2021.595150/
full). The core part of the research is to reverse engineer the process by which COVID-19 infects patients, identifying a unique set of biomarkers specific to lung, liver, kidney, and heart organs. The biomarkers identified were validated on prospective patients’ samples.
The work is carried out by Ms. Sarah Hammoudeh (PhD student) and led by Professor Rifat Hamoudi in collaboration with Professor Rabih Halwani, Professor Qutayba Hamid and Dr Mohammed Rahmani. This work is supported by the University of Sharjah COVID-19 grant (No: CoV19-0308) entitled “The use of bioinformatics and engineering mathematics followed by biological in vitro and in vivo validation to decipher the molecular mechanism of COVID-19 infection of the respiratory tract”.

4- SIMR Seminar: Elucidating the association of vitamin A and of diabetes
Dr. Jalal Taneera from the Sharjah institute for medical research, delivered a seminar on his research titled: Elucidating the Association of Vitamin A and of Diabetes: A Clinical and Molecular Study.
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a complex polygenic disease with unclear mechanisms.
Clinical studies on the association of vitamin A with T2D in humans are still controversial. Also, whether ablation of VA receptors is involved in pancreatic β-cell dysfunction is not mature.
The study investigated the plasma levels of vitamin A and its correlations with clinical phenotypes in Emirati population cohort comprised of 158 T2D-subjects and 90 healthy controls. The effect of glucose-and lipid-lowering medications on vitamin A levels was also studied. RNA-sequencing from human islets with/without type 2 diabetes (T2D) were utilized to profile the expression of VA-regulatory genes.
Several functional studies in rat INS-1 cells will be performed, including siRNA silencing of VA receptors to assess their effect on insulin secretion, glucose uptake, expression of key proteins involved in β-cell function, cell survival and viability.
Results have shown that vitamin A is reduced among Emirati-T2D subjects with no influence of glucose and lipid-lowering medications. RARβ influences insulin secretion and pancreatic β-cell function. The data further support the potential role of vitamin A in the development of T2D.
