ALERTS
About Alerts
Due to this change, any alert, stop loss and conditional order may be activated after business hours. Default orders with "Trade Price" as criteria may be activated based on prints posted after business hours. Alerts and conditional orders placed on NYSE securities during pre- or post-market hours will only be able to be activated after the market opens, even if the security is traded through an ECN.
Adding an Alert
This means they update Level I data up to 2.5 hours after the market closes. NYSE alerts are based on Level I bid and ask prices, which come only from the exchange and never from third-party sources such as ISLD.
Setting Alert Conditions
Bid Bases your alert on the inside bid price at the time you set the alert. Ask Bases your alert on the inside ask price at the time you set the alert. Volume Bases your alert on the cumulative intraday volume at the time you set the alert.
Trailing Stop Loss
Trailing Stop only applies to the winning and losing operators, but can be applied to a point value or a percentage. Where a regular stop loss is based on the change between the current market price and the value you specify, the trailing stop compares the highest or lowest point the stock has reached since the alert went in with the value you specified. EXAMPLE Bob placed a trailing stop to close his long position (which was at $20 when the alert was triggered) when it lost $.05.
Setting Alert Actions
Box If the alert is lit, the symbol you specify here will load into the selected inventory box. In some cases, if you are entering an order and your alert lights up for a different symbol, you may be sending the order for the alert symbol rather than the one you intended to place an order for. NOTE Because this action will send an order, make sure you have completed all fields correctly before triggering the alert.
Setting Advanced Alert Options
The order will not be placed unless you are logged in and confirm the order. TIP Find sounds to play: You'll need to use .wav files, which are a common type of audio file. Some .wav files can be downloaded from the web and several are included with the Windows operating system software.
Applying Alert Templates
To activate an alert template that does not require an open position, click Finish in the Alert Templates window and fill in any blank fields. Select the alert template to apply to the symbol, or you can create a new alert. You will be prompted to fill in any remaining variables for the alert and then the alert can be set.
