Course description:
This course will provide students with basic knowledge and understanding of the types of plants constituents.
Method of extraction, isolation, classification, test of identity, solubility, physical and chemical properties, chemical structure and uses of carbohydrates, flavonoids, bitter principles and alkaloids containing drugs.
Scientific name, English and Arabic name/s, part/s used and uses of plants containing alkaloids.
Aims of the course:
1. To provide students with basic knowledge about the chemistry of crude drugs such as carbohydrates, flavonoids, volatile oils, bitter principles and alkaloids.
2. To know the scientific name, English name, Arabic name/s, main constituent/s method of extraction, isolation of the main active constituent/s, properties, test of identify and uses of plants containing alkaloids.
3. To understand the method of extraction, and isolation of the main active constituent/s

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

Identify the different classes of natural products and the structural features of the pure compounds.B.
