Course title: Pharmaceutics -practical
(1101319)
Office Hours: To be announced
Course description:
This course will introduce the student to the knowledge of different pharmaceutical dosage forms, their intended applications and the method of their preparation.
Aims of the course:
1. To introduce the definition of pharmaceutics and to discuss its principles.
2. To learn the skills of fundamental mathematical calculations used in drug compounding and dispensing.
3. To learn the proper way for drug dispensing and labelling.
4. To understand the differences between pharmaceutical dosage forms (liquids, solids and semi-solid).
5. To understand and apply the different methods used to prepare the pharmaceutical dosage forms.
6. To relate each dosage form to its intended application.
Intended Learning Outcomes: (ILOs) A. Knowledge and Understanding
A1. Concepts and Theories: define and understand the basic concept of pharmaceutics, solutions, suspensions, emulsion, ointments, paste and gels, suppositories and capsules.
A2. Contemporary Trends, Problems and Research: Comprehend the pharmacist responsibility in drugcompounding and dispensing.
A3. Professional Responsibility: to use chemicals and equipments safely and effectively to prepare pharmaceutical dosage forms and to dispense and label drug properly.
B. Subject-specific skills
B1. Problem solving skills: solve problem related to drug compounding and dispensing; such as creamingin emulsion and sedimentation in suspension.
B2. Modeling and Design: to scale up or scale down from master formula to the required formula and todesign a drug label with full and clear information.
B3. Application of Methods and Tools: to understand and apply the different method used for preparationof solutions, emulsion, ointments and suppositories.
C. Critical-Thinking Skills
C1. Analytic skills: the ability to determine the emulsion types (o/w, o/w) by simple method, and to determine the problem facing emulsion upon preparation and standing (creaming, cracking, phase inversion).
C2. Strategic Thinking: to prepare a dosage form by choosing proper ingredients, additives and preparationmethod.
C3. Creative thinking and innovation: contrive innovative solutions for problems facing dosage forms uponpreparation and standing.
D. General and Transferable Skills (other skills relevant to employability and personal development)
