Lab Safety Rules

2. Students should keep the workbench, sink and floor clean for safety reason. Absolutely no littering.

Lab Safety Rules:

1. Students should come to the lab on time. No food or drinks are allowed in the Lab.

Lab Safety Rules

4. Dress appropriately. Avoid wearing overly-bulky or loose fitting clothing, or dangling jewelry that may become entangled in your experimental apparatus. Pin or tie back long hair and roll up loose sleeves.

3. Absolutely no horse play. Be alert and attentive at all times. Act like an adult.

5

Lab Safety Rules

5. Students should follow the instructions on the lab worksheet whenever possible. Students are also encouraged to be creative and come up their own ways to achieve the experiment's goal or exploring physical related phenomena not covered by the worksheet. If there is any change to the experimental apparatus or the way of conducting the experiment, for safety reason, students should get the teacher's permission before try something original.

8. Ask the teacher to check all electrical circuits before you turn on the power.

Lab Safety Rules

6. Use equipment with care for the purpose for which it is intended.

7. Carefully handle the fire. Be careful when working with apparatus that may be hot. If you must pick it up, use tongs, a wet paper towel, or other appropriate holder.

Lab Safety Rules

9. When working with electric circuits, be sure that the current is turned off before making adjustments in the circuit.

10. Pay attention to the polarity of batteries. Do not connect the terminals of a battery or power supply to each other with a wire. Such a wire will become dangerously hot.

Lab Safety Rules

11. Read the experimental instructions carefully and make sure you know what you're about to do before starting to do it.

12. Make sure you're in good communication with your partner so that you both know at all times what each other is doing.

Lab Safety Rules

13. Let the teacher know if you have any physical problem that might interfere with the normal method of working.

14. In the unlikely event of finding your equipment faulty or damaged, don't attempt to repair it yourself. Call over the teacher.

(10)

Physics Department

10

16. In the event of a fire or on hearing the fire bell, turn off the equipment or fire source, and leave calmly by the stairs.

Lab Safety Rules

15. Know the location of the nearest fire extinguisher and first aid kit.

(11)

Physics Department

11

17. Report all accidents, injuries or breakage to the teacher immediately. Also, report any equipment that you suspect is malfunctioning.

Example 2:

When working with electric circuits:

Solution:

(C) (A)Be sure that you wear goggles.

(B) Be sure that you are not working alone in that experiment.

(C) Be sure that the current is turned off.

Example 4:

If you are connecting a voltmeter or ammeter to a circuit:

Solution:

(C) (A)You should ask your colleague.

(B) You should switch on the circuit.

(C) You should have your teacher approve.

Example 7:

On entering a lab, and after following the safety instructions, what precaution should the student do next?

Solution:

(D)

(A)Read experiment instructions and steps carefully.

(B) Notice the fire extinguisher location.

(C) Never work alone.

(D)All of the above must be obeyed.

Example 8:

A student was passing by a laboratory which was on fire but he was the only one did notice that. What should he do first?

Solution:

(D)

(A) Use the proper fire extinguisher trying to put the fire off, and then inform the safety man in charge.

(B) Leave the lab alone and go find help.

(C) Make notice of the lab constituents to make sure that there are no exploding materials or gas cylinders and then use fire

extinguisher to put the fire off.

(D) Inform the safety authority and then, if he has an experience, try to use fire extinguisher to put the fire out.

- Do not use any equipment unless you are trained and approved as a user.

( True ) - If leaving a lab unattended, turn off all ignition sources

and lock the doors.

( True ) - Protective clothing should be kept free of oil and grease and should be inspected and maintained regularly to preserve its effectiveness.

Lab Procedures

2. Pick up the Lab Worksheet. Pick up lab worksheets on the workbench near the door as you entering the room.

Lab Procedures:

1. Preview the Lab Worksheet Online. The lab worksheet will be posted online the day before the lab.

Lab Procedures

4. Work as a Team. Each student should belong to a group and contribute their intelligence and efforts to the group.

3. Pick up Materials and Equipment. Each group sends one person to pick up their materials and equipment for the day.

Lab Procedures

5. File the Lab Worksheet to Your Own Lab Folder. The lab folders will be place on the teacher's workbench. Students should file their lab worksheets to their own lab folders by the end of next lab session. Remember to fill out the “Table of Content” sheet. The teacher will grade the lab worksheets periodically.

6. Return the Equipment/Supplies after the Experiment.

Students should check and return all the equipment and lab supplies after the experiment. It is the group's responsibility to maintain everything they received in original quality and quantity to the teacher. If there is anything missing or broken, please report to the teacher as soon as possible.

Example 10:

If a thermometer is broken, you should:

Solution:

(B)

(A)Collect the broken glass and throw it in the basket.

(B) Inform your teacher immediately.

(C) Wash the bench with water.
