So one way to think about your career is to be aware of the different focus you may have at different stages of your career. One way to think about your career development is to think about what motivates you.

Three career paths: getting by, getting on and getting ahead

This is the time to make sure you're ready for opportunities as they develop—to consider moving up. Another way to answer this question is to think about career progression through the development of social capital.

Social Capital

This is an often overlooked way to help you move forward and improve your career planning. So, to improve your career, you need to connect with others to build the kinds of connections you're often networking in your organization.

Careers in stages

Your career progression will begin to happen when you build networks and connections with the people around you. Moving forward will be helped when you network more broadly and expand your network by making connections within your organization first, you need to connect with other teams and departments and other levels of the organization. Career stages are just as important as career paths when thinking about how to develop your career.

Each of the levels is likely to suggest different approaches and a different focus for career development. The following table summarizes some of the different approaches for each of the six career stages. You should regularly review your career and life stages and assess what your priorities are.

You should look ahead and plan to develop your career in a way that is ready for the next stage.
