bors ‘n Gé Korsten-lied, “Hier is ‘n mens’ gesing.

BRITS POS – BAPONG – Friends were celebrating the new year at a tavern in Bapong on 1 January 2023 around 03:00 when a brawl ensued outside the tavern and the victim went outside to see what happened.

The onlooker (19) fell to the ground after being hit by something to his ear and on closer examination he found that blood was streaming from his ear down his neck.

An unknown female assisted the victim to get up and together they made their way down the road, as his friends went to get transport to take him to Bapong Clinic, but while waiting for transport, a person told

the victim that he allegedly saw the owner of the tavern firing shots from the rooftop.

A case of attempted murder was opened at the Mooinooi police station. “No arrest has yet been made and anyone who can assist the police in their investigation is requested to call Detective Commander Lt Col Mahajane on 082 416 3598,” requests SAPS North West spokesperson, Lt Col Amanda Funani.

Shooting incident at New Year’s party celebrations

BRITS POS – LETLHABILE - A couple and their two grandchildren were asleep inside their house in Letlhabile on Tuesday, 10 January around 21:50, when three armed men entered the couple’s bedroom, holding them at gunpoint and demanding money.

The woman gave them the money, but they demanded her husband’s taxi takings for the day. When it wasn’t forthcoming, they tied him up and assaulted him. They loaded him in his taxi, a Nissan Ipendulo and took off.

Around 06:00 the following morning a security guard notified the Letlhabile police of a naked body that was dumped next to Block C’s Cemetery.

On police’s arrival they found the lifeless body with numerous bullet wounds to his head, neck and upper body, identified as the taxi owner and he was declared deceased by EMS.

The abandoned vehicle was found at Kgabalatsane. “Cases of house robbery, kidnapping and murder were opened at the Letlhabile police station,” says Lt Col Amanda Funani, SAPS North West spokesperson.

“They appeared in court on Wednesday.” (At our going to press, the official police statement was not yet available.)

Vier kinders se registrasiefooie is by verskillende skole betaal.

*Noodsaaklike behoeftes van die Sentrum Van Hoop: klere: dogters 3, 6 en 7 jaar oud; bababedjie-matrassies en beddegoed, babadoeke: 3 tot 6 maande; babamelk:

Pelargon Nr.3, Infacare Nr. 3 (pers), Lactogen Nr.3; werkende yskas;

Indien jy ‘n bydrae kan maak, kontak asseblief vir Karen Eysele by 072 011 2849 of [email protected]

Afskryf van kragskuld

bevorder ‘n legio uitdagings

BRITS POS – BRITS - The Solidarity- owned Sol-Tech will start offering its first Information Technology (IT) qualifications from April 2023.

The private Afrikaans technical college was launched in 2007 and has gradually expanded its courses in several technical vocations over the past few years.

Aside from the incoming IT certifications, the accredited private tertiary institution offers full-time qualifications for welders, fitters and turners, toolmakers, electricians, and millwrights.

Sol-Tech said that rapid advancements in the technology industry had made education in technology infrastructure, software development, cybersecurity, and data very popular.

But the college’s managing director, Paul van Deventer, said research showed there was a massive shortage of high-quality IT training institutions and educators in South Africa.

“As a career training institution, we are stepping into a new era with this expansion,”

Van Deventer stated.

Sol-Tech will initially focus its IT programmes on three specialist fields in the tech industry –

IT and network support, data and cloud, and cybersecurity.

The courses are being offered in partnership with the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), which issues professional IT qualifications that are internationally recognised.

The individual certifications that will be available are as follows: CompTIA A+

(Core 1); CompTIA A+ (Core 2), CompTIA Network +, CompTIA Security+; CompTIA Data +; CompTIA Linux+; CompTIA Server+; CompTIA Cloud+; CompTIA CYSA+; CompTIA PenTest+; CompTIA CASP+; CompTIA ITF+; CompTIA Cloud Essentials+ and CompTIA Project+.

Prospective students can enrol in the courses now, with the first classes starting in April 2023. Sol-Tech offers more details about each specialist field and applying for the courses on its website.

Students can use virtual labs for distance learning and will also attend in-person sessions in “well-equipped” classrooms during block weeks at Sol-Tech’s Monument Park campus.

The state-of-the-art facility opened its doors in early 2021. It earned Solidarity and its property investment arm, Kanton Investments, high praise for being built under budget and ahead of schedule, despite the construction process being hampered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Solidarity assured that the IT programme would be taught with the same core principles that Sol-Tech has used for its other programmes over the past 15 years.

The launch of the IT certifications comes in the same year in which Solidarity’s private Afrikaans university - Akademia - enrols its first students in a full-time three- year computer science degree course at its Centurion campus.

The programme has a starting cost of R55,440 in the first year. For comparison, the University of Pretoria charges upwards of R66,000 for the first year of its BSc Computer Science degree.

Akademia is also planning to build a large new campus in Pretoria, which will include student residences, by 2025.

Ongelukke eis lewens

said Makro’s customers keenly shopped for generators, inverters, and rechargeable lights.

Aside from food and liquor, Makro’s most popular product during the holiday shopping period was the Magneto Rechargeable Light. While typically used for camping, this LED lantern is also ideal for handling load- shedding as it can be set to automatically switch on when a power cut happens.

Another load-shedding product featured in Makro’s top 10 best-sellers was the Ryobi 7.5kVA generator.Numerous households have opted for fuel-based generators to provide backup power to their homes during load-shedding, as they can typically support a larger number of appliances than similarly- priced inverter-and-battery setups. The Ryobi 7.5KVA generator has a rated output of 6,000W and peak of 7,000W, which makes it capable of even running intensive electricity consumers like a tumble dryer, electric oven, or pool pump.

Overall, Makro’s top 10 list of most-sold products between 16 December 2022 and 2 January 2023 was as follows:

Koff said that sales in the week post- Christmas were concentrated on smaller value items such as stationery as customers prepared for their children to return to school.

“20% of Makro customers shopped stationery in the holiday period,” Koff stated.

Takealot said it also saw high sales of various load-shedding devices. “From UPS devices to portable power stations and LED lanterns from popular brands like EcoFlow, Gizzu and Magneto, South Africans flocked to Takealot to mitigate the increase in load-shedding,” the online retailer stated.

EcoFlow and Gizzu provide a range of portable lithium-ion power stations with varying capacities.

These are typically suited for running a handful of less-demanding appliances — like TVs, monitors, computers, lights, and routers.

you can’t resist something on the ‘banned’ list – making it more likely you’ll give up altogether. In any case, a diet regime that feels like a chore will be difficult to stick to in the long term. Eating healthily by focusing on positive steps rather than negative ones is much easier – and often more effective, too.

More of the right things: Eating more may seem strange if you’re trying to lose weight, but eating at regular intervals (three nutritious meals a day, plus snacks if needed) and eating more of the right things can help. Don’t focus on what you can’t have, focus on what you can have – fruits and vegetables, white and oily fish, wholegrain and high- fibre starchy carbohydrates. This will leave less room for foods like fatty or processed meats, and salty or sugary snacks and drinks.

Don’t focus on what you can’t have, focus on what you can have:

Doing this will help balance your diet, which should mean you get all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals needed for good health and the right amount of energy, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight.

Fill up on fruit and veg: Having at least five portions of fruits and vegetables each day can help protect your heart and reduce your risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke. What’s more, the fibre content will fill you up and reduce temptation from unhealthy foods.

Eating more fruit and vegetables is easy. Add stewed fruit, sliced banana or berries to yoghurt or porridge for breakfast. Put extra veg in soups, stews and sauces, or just have an extra portion or two alongside your main meal. Fruit is an obvious snack, but don’t overlook vegetables – cut sweet peppers, carrots, celery or cucumber into batons so they’re ready when hunger strikes, or simply wash cherry tomatoes and radishes.

Adding pomegranate seeds, grapes or apples to salads can make them look and taste more exciting.

Whole lot of grains: Wholegrain foods such as bread, brown rice and wholemeal pasta are a source of fibre, so choose them over white varieties to keep your digestive system healthy. Other wholegrains like oats also provide soluble fibre that can help lower cholesterol levels. You could have porridge or a wholegrain bagel for breakfast, wholemeal pasta salad for lunch and grilled chicken and brown rice salad for dinner.

Wholegrain rice cakes topped with banana are an easy snack.

Go for fish: Aim to have two portions of fish a week and make one of these an oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, trout or fresh tuna (not tinned). Oily fish is a source of protein and provides omega-3 fatty acids, associated with reducing your risk of heart and circulatory disease. Adding fish to your diet can help reduce your meat intake and the saturated fat and salt that can come with it.

Buy more food: Being prepared and buying more of the right foods makes it easier to follow a healthy diet and means you’re less likely to eat out or order takeaway food.

Planning meals in advance and going to the supermarket with a shopping list for the week ahead will help you stay on track. Be realistic about how much you will cook and eat in a week, so you don’t waste food.

Going to the supermarket with a shopping list for the week ahead will help you stay on track Cooking your own meals can help you eat healthily by allowing you to control the

amount of fat, salt and sugar you add.

If cooking from scratch seems difficult, start small with a plan to cook once or twice a week, or cook one thing you can eat over a couple of days at the weekend and build up from there. If time is an issue, make the most of your weekend and batch cook and freeze meals for during the week.

Colour it in: Making meals colourful increases their appeal. Add a variety of coloured vegetables such as tomatoes, spinach, yellow peppers, beetroot, carrots and sweetcorn to make your meals look great on the plate, and more nutritious too. It’s also good from a nutrition perspective to eat a range of colours, as different fruits and vegetables have varying nutritional benefits.

There’s even evidence that using coloured plates (or cups or straws) can influence your perception of foods. Pink and white striped straws create an illusion of sweetness, making vegetable-based smoothies more palatable.

Likewise, eating leafy green vegetables like spinach or broccoli can be more pleasant from a red plate.

Enjoy your food: There’s no point eating food you don’t enjoy. Try out different foods to find ones you love.

Find hundreds of heart-healthy recipe ideas. We’ve also got healthy versions of your favourite takeaway dishes, such as chicken and green bean curry, dry masala prawns, and red onion, courgette and pepper pizza.

It takes around 20 minutes to feel full once you’ve finished eating. Slowing down as you eat and taking time to enjoy your food can help you resist a second helping or dessert.

Seth shows his Wolverines strength in Nebraska

BRITS POS – BRITS – Seth Vallance (19), a former head boy of Thornhill Primary School, made his mark on the rugby fields, not only in school and at his local Wolverines Rugby Club, but also internationally in Nebraska, USA.

Seth left SA in August last year to play rugby and attend Wayne State College in Nebraska.

According to the head coach of Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska USA, Darrin Barner, Seth is an excellent rugby player.

“Playing rugby lock/2nd row for Wayne State College, he has been selected to the NCR National College Rugby All Star Tournament that was recently held in Houston, Texas, Barner said. “The All Star competition takes the very best players in the USA at college and university levels to compete against each other in a three day tournament. Vallance played for the Western Grizzlies who are the regional scouting group for the state of Nebraska along with other Western States in the USA.”

“With a talent pool of 500 college rugby teams in the USA, this is quite an honour for anyone, but I had to laugh when Seth told me that he thinks he is the only (Freshman) first  year  student  selected  on  the  team,  and  I told him, he needs to be very proud since 90% of the players chosen are probably a few third-year players and most being fourth year students between 22-23 years old. I’m pretty sure he is the only freshman on the team, which simply says what type of raw talent he has.”

After the tournament the best 23 players

in the country were selected for the All-Tournament Team at the Collegiate Rugby All Star National Shield Challenge and Seth Vallance was on that list.

With four years of university rugby ahead of him this is a player to watch. (Photos provided)
