Transvaal Young Israel Executive.

The newly-elected Executive of Transvaal Young Israel elected last month at the conference in Pretoria, met last week in the Board Room of the offices of the South African Zionist Federation. Mr. Israel Dunsky, the chairman, welcomed the newly-elected representa- tives, Messrs. I. Blankfield, N. Levitt and S. Oschry, and expressed the hope that their co-operation would help to further the interests of young Israel in the Ttansvaal.

The tentative programme of activities for the en- suing year was discussed, and it was decided that the following sub-committees be appointed: Cultural and Oratorical Competition-Mr. D. J. Etkind (convenor);

and Messrs. Levitt and Blankfield. Sports-Mr. P. Rap-

as convenor, and with him Mr. D. J. Etkind.

Tenth Anniversary of the Death of Berdichevsky

Lecture by Mr. C. G~rshater.

On Saturday night, the 16th inst., Mr. C. Gershater de- livered a lecture before the Johannesburg Hebrew Speaking Circle on the life and works of M. J. Berdichevsky. The lecturer gave an analysis of the works of the great Hebrew writer, tracing his influence on the present generation of Heb- rew writers and readers, and on the theory and practice of the Zionist movement. He referred to the great controversy that took place between Achad Ha'am and Berdichevsky and dis- cussed the manner in whic11 it is reflected in recent Hebrew literature.

The lecture given on Thursday evening, the 1·1th in. t., on the subject of "The Book of Esther" by Mrs. Selina Hirsch marks the inauguration of the second eries of fifty lectures delivered over the Johannesburg· Broadcasting Station.

The series has been organised by Mr. A. Couzin, and it is of interest to record that the first lecture wus delivered by Mrs. Hirsch on Septemb r 23rd, 1927. These lectures of Jewish interest are delivered each month.

REGISTRATION OF LITHUANIAN SUBJF' TS.

All Lithuanian subjects in South Africa are requested to register with the Lithuanian Consulate at Kloof Lodge, Kloof Road, Capetown, or at 485 Standard Bank Chambers corner of President and Kruis Streets, Johannesburg, as ~oon as possible. Registrations will be accepted between 11 a.m. and 12 noon and .3 and 4 p.m. daily. Failure to register is punishable by law.

A NEW PHOTOGRAPHER.

A new photographic establishment has been opened in Johannesburg by Mr. M. Milcenson, who comes here with an ex- cellent reputation from Europe as an efficient and artistic photographer. Since his arrival in this country some little time ago Mr. M. Milcenson has been engaged in cinema work but has now decided to establish himself as a photographer with premises at 44 Pritchard Street (near corner of Loveday Street). He looks forward to receiving the support of the ladies and gentlemen of the community.

CONCERT IN AID OF NATIONAL FUND.

A very successful concert in aid of the Jewish N at:onal Fund was held last Sunday night at His Majesty's Bioscope, Muizenberg, under the auspices of the Bnoth Zion Association.

There was a large gathering present and a very enjoyable pro- gramme had been arranged.

Those who contributed to the programme were Mr. Boris Rome, who sang a number of Hebrew and Yiddish melodies; Mrs.

P. Herbstein, who gave a 'cello solo; Mr. M. Losman, who re- cited; Miss Pearl Lazarus, who danced; Miss Ethel Fernandez, a pupil of Mis. Lazarus', who also danced; Mrs. S. Karnovsky, of Johannesburg, who sang; Miss Lilian Gelb, who gave a 'cello solo and Miss Sylvia Kirsch who sang. During the course of the evening a lecturette on the significance of the Jewish Na ti on al Fund was delive1·ed b , Mr. J. Herbstein.

The e. hibition of Hebre\\ and Yiddish books which was held th previous week at the Zionist Hall under the auspices of the Brith Ivrith, was brnught to a close on W dnesday night last.

A large number of viRitors attended the exhibition, but the fin- ancial iesults were not as successful as was hoped they would be.

Mr. B. L. Rubik presided over the closing ceremony. He stated that even though the exhibition had not been a success from a financial point of view, it had been successful in that it had brought to the knowledge of many people the fact that the Jewish people possessed a literature of which it might well be proud. Mr. Rubik thanked all those who had asRisted and taken an interest in the exhibition.

Dr. J. Mibashan spoke briefly on the place of the Hebrew book, after which Dr. S. E. Kark formally dec!ared the exhibition closed.

OBITUARY.

Mr. M. L. GREENBLATT (Standerton).

A prominent resident of Standerton, Mr. Morris Leopold Greenblatt (49), has passed away.

Mr. Greenblatt came to South Africa from London shortly before the Anglo-Boer War. In 1904 he manied Miss Lily Simons, also of London, and opened a business at Standerton, which has grown to be one of the foremost in the town.

Mr. Greenblatt took an active part in municipal politics until a year or two ago, and was an energetic worker in the interests of Zionism and the local Hebrew Congregation. He was also a prominent F1eemason, having been thrice Master of the Standerton Lodge of the English Constitution and Past Senior Grand Deacon of the Transvaal District Grand Lodge.
