T almud Tora h Examinations.

The annual examination al the UniLed Hebrew Schools was held from the 28th ult:mo to the 2nd instant inclusive, under the auspices of the Education Sub-committee in conjunction with the S.A. Board of Jewi h Education.

The examination was conducted by Dr.

A. Birnbaum, and on Sunday last an invita- tion was extended by the Comm~tlee to Mr.

J. Gesundheit, an ex-Chairman of the School.

to be present at the examination. During the course of the morning Mr. Gesundheit addressed the children in Hebrew. Master Abie Friedgood suitably replied on behalf of the pupils, al o in Hebrew. All ex- pupil who received during the last five year the Gesundheit Bursary were intro- duced to him.

Claremont Jewish Ladies' Society.

The annual general meeting of the Clare- mont Jew:sh Ladies' Society was held at the Talmud Torah Hall, Grove Avenue, Claremont, on Tuesday, 28th August, 1931.

During the evening a short address wa delivered by \Tr. Sonnenberg who spoke of his visit lo Europe, from which he has just returned, and parLicularly of conditions in Germany. He urged the need for a united Jewish community.

A chess tournament and a chess display by \1r. Gerber, one of the champion of the Cape Town Ches Club, will take place under the auspices of the ZionisL Socialist Party on Tuesday evening, 25th inst. Prize;:, will he awarded. All interested are cordi- ull) imitcd.

The speaker dealt al some length with the "Variou Jewish Festivals and stressed mainly the national and religious ideas pre- vailing in them. He quoted numerous com-

mentaries in connections with various

pas ages of the Bible which are read on the respective Festivals.

Mr. W olozinsky concluded with the Festival of Succoth which symbolises the existf'nce of our nation and the claim for unity which is to he under tood m the Arbaa MinJim.

"J.N.F. Week."

Mr. E. Kluk, President of the Cape Zionisl Youlh Executive, was the speaker of the evening and made an eloquent appeal to members to give their support to the great national undertaking. Briefly out- lining the princ:ples of the J .N.F., he showed how indispensable was this work of Lhe Zionist Organisation.

Two sketches, taken from the special

"J.N.F. Progremme" were put on by mem- bers of the Society. The financial contri- butions to the Fund were relatively large.

At this meeting, too, the Constitution was read and ratified, and the ports report, held over since the general elections, was submitted by the Convenor.

Zionist Socialist Party.

Under the auspices of the above Party a Bialik Evening was held in the Zionist Hall last Sunday night, over which Mr. Z.

Natas, deliYered a lecture on the "Life and Work of Ch. ~. Bialik." He dealt with the var:ow aspects of the poC't's \rnrk and indi ·al cl the µreal influenc h. . Bialik had on the Jewish revival and on the re\ ival of Hebrew, of Jewish thought and labour. The l<' 'lurer also stressed the port's altitude towards the working Pales- tine and the ChaluLzim, :n whom he saw the bcsl and only means for the true revival and Tej uvenaLicn of the Jewish people in their Homeland.

The Party ha acquired a Club and Office at 5, Wandel Street, as from the 1st insL.

The formal opening of the Club will ·be celebrated on Tuesday. 11th inst., al 8.15 p.m. A 11 members and friends are corcLally invited.
