Stressing the im- pertance of discipline the lecturer showed Lhe difficulties Hebrew schools encountered in this re5pect. hut pointed out that while there were certainl; rule which a teacher should obey, the maintaining of discipline was a special faculty possessed b) the teacher, rather than the resiult of either kno, dedge or experience. The ideal disci- pline was that in which the teacher's influ- ence was felt unconsciously or subcon- sciously, and Lhe gifted teacher who had l'Ommand over himself could in!:pire his pupils with confidence in him and form a magnetic: hond between himself and hi.

The speaker of the evening at the con- Yersazione in the Zioni.:;t Hall on Tuesday e' ening last was Mr. I. M. Goodman, who choo'.:'e as his subject " The Jews in South Africa." Starting off with a very interest- ing resume of the early history of South A..f ·ica and f'numerating the <>arly Je'\" \\ho
·we ·e to be found here, Mr. Goodman gradually traced the development right up to the present day affairs and the present P,O ition of Jewry in this country.
The speaker pointed out that the world regarded Jewry a~ a united and highly o··ganised people, but he said we were a highly organi ed people only in an in- :·tilulional sense, and this point he illus- trated from the present situation and the two hodiesr--the American Jewish Congress and American Jewish Committee in America, as well as the po~ition in England and even Germany itc:elf.
Mr. Goodman gave the history of the South African Jewi h Board of Deputies,
