Yorn Kippur.

Y om Kippur was ushered in on Sunday night with the usual solemnity and rever- ence. Inspiring services were held at the Synagogues and at the various Minyanim which had been arranged for the High Festi- vals, all of which were packed to the doors both on Sunday night and on Monday.

Where sermons were delivered on Rosh Hashona they were also delivered on Y om Kippur. In several cases, however, addresses were delivered where there were none la t week. Thus in the Roeland Street Synagogue Mr. M. Gurland, in a short speech, made an appeal on behalf of the Board of Guardians, whilst in the Talmud Torah Mr. S. H.

Friedland spoke on behalf of local Jewish institutions generally.

When a ked for an expr sion of opinion on the Congre s and its results, Mr. Ochberg, who is looking extremely well, said that the subject wa much to bi.g for him to be able to do justice to it in a short interview. THE 5.A. JEWISH CHRONICLE.

Suicide W ave Feared .

BERLIN JEWRY ALARMED.

Berlin.

Jn view of the continuing wave of suicides among German Jews, owing to their des- perate economic position, the Berlin Jewish Community is in a state of consternation over its decision to dismiss a large number of its officials, because it has no mean of paying their salaries, and must take drasfr·

economy measures, fearing that these din.

missed officials, having no other employmenl open to them, will be moved to join the in- creasing number of Jewish suicides in Ger- many.

AL the ame time, the alarm of German Jewry o-ver the dangers confronting them on the political side is added to by the annollncement of Deputy Goebbels, the Hit- leri 'l leader in Berlin, that a new big Hit- leri t offensh-e i to be launched this autumn,

·which he is convinced will he successful in slahl i hing a Hitleri t Government in p01ver.

The HiLlerist Party, he declared, has now 600,000 memhers enrolled on its hooks, he-

side~ .trwthN 200,000 torrn troops.

There are, however, acute party differ- ence , it appears, in the Hitlerist ranks, aud it is believed that the party may split, fol- lowing the action of two of the chief leaders, Deputy Franzen, who was Minister of the Interior in the Brunswick Government, and Deputy Groh, the Chairman of the Hitlerist fraction in the Brunswick Diet, in announc- ing officially that they have left the Hitlerist Party. They have done this as a prote"t against an order sent out by Hitler that Deputy Rust, another prominent Hitlerist in Brunswick, should be the next Minister of the Interior in Brunswick instead of Deputy Franzen.

The entire activist group of the Hitlerist Party throughout Germany is protesting against the dictatorial attitude of Hitler in appointing and dismissing his leaders in the various States, and it is said that they are considering a secession en masse.

The selection of suitable material for the modern house is a matter upon which much time should be spent, for upon it depends ' ry largely not only the comfort of the occupants but also the appearance of the .finished structure.

It is a well known fact that stone u ed in Jmilding perishe gradually in the acid atmosphere of cities, hut well-humed bricks remain unharmed and even improve in hard- ness by exposure; they can ably withstand de tructive agencies like fire and water.

Bricks are remarkable historically, tech- nically, aesthetically, and it might almost be added, socially. Space does not allow us to describe the romance of brick-making and its development during the ages, but we '\ould point out that the brick-making indus- try to-day has been reduced to a very fine art indeed.

faery brick i inspected and tested many times during the course of its manufacture.

At every tage, from the selection of the raw material to the final breaking te~t,

c>.·traordinary care is given in its production.

n<l no wonder, for we build with the aim in 'iew of a permanent structure. We know, of cour e, that time will take its toll: hut this we can counteract by repairs.

All

these qualities can be achieved by using the best quality bricks-the bricks that are ohtainable at the Hume Pipe Co. Consult thi firm when building your home. The Hume Pipe Co. (S.A.), Ltd., 5, Hout Street, Cape Town.
