The Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk Melierax canorus is a common raptor in more arid habitats and may often be seen perched on roadside poles in the Karoo. Its grey coloration, long red legs and typically upright posture all serve to identify it. It captures prey in a quick swoop from its vantage point, and its diet comprises small mammals, snakes, lizards, birds and insects. Its name derives from its melodious chanting call, a loud piping kleeu-kleeu-kleeu-klu- klu-klu-klu which accelerates and becomes more tremulous towards the end. The call is often emitted at dawn, and from a distance could be mistaken for the
