3. ECONOMIC OVERVIEW
This article gives an overview of the major macroeconomic changes in the agricultural sector from the period 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020 to the period 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021.
Gross farming income
Gross farming income refers to the agricultural production that is marketed, together with the part that is for own consumption, both valued at basic prices.
Gross farming income that was earned from all agricultural products increased by 15,8% and is estimated to be R339 005 million for the period ended 31 March 2021, largely because of the increase in income from field crops and horticultural products by 38,7% and 17,6%, respectively.
The increase of 38,7% in income from field crops was driven by the increase in income from groundnuts by 152,7%, wheat (62,1%), soya beans (61,0%), grain sorghum (49,9%), maize (44,1%), sunflower seed (37,7%), tobacco (22,1%), sugar cane (8,5%) and dry beans (8,0%).
The income from horticultural products increased by 17,6% due to the increase in income derived from citrus fruit by 37,9%, deciduous and other fruit by 23,9%, viticulture by 7,3%, vegetables by 6,2% and subtropical fruit by 5,5%.
The income from animal products increased by 5,1% due to the increase in income derived from milk by 15,7%, sheep slaughtered by 11,5%, cattle and calves slaughtered by 4,6%, poultry meat by 2,9% and eggs by 2,7%.
Expenditure on intermediate production inputs
Expenditure on intermediate production inputs refers to the value of the goods and services that were purchased to be consumed as inputs during the production process.
Expenditure on intermediate goods and services increased by 6,6% to R172 243 million for the period ended 31 March 2021. The expenditure on seed and plants and building and fencing material increased by 10,0% each, farm feeds (9,1%), packing material (9,0%), animal health and crop protection and farm services (6,0%) each, fertilisers and fuel (3,0%) each, maintenance and repairs of machinery and implements (2,0%).
Farm feeds remained the largest expenditure item and accounted for 28,8% of the total expenditure on intermediate inputs, maintenance and repairs of machinery and implements (13,1%), farm services (12,1%), fuel (8,1%), seed and plants (7,4%), animal health and crop protection (6,2%), packing material (5,2%), building and fencing material (4,5%), fertilisers (4,4%).
Prices received and prices paid by farmers, as well as terms of trade
Prices earned by the farmers for their agricultural products increased on average by 4,6%, mainly due to the increase in prices of field crops and horticultural products by 11,2% and 4,4%, respectively.

The increase of 11,2% in prices of field crops was the result of the increase in prices of tobacco by 37,0%, oilseeds (32,6%), sugar cane (14,5%), hay (13,6%), dry beans (13,5%), winter grains (13,3%) and summer grains (5,0%).
The prices of horticultural products increased by 6,9% due to the increase in prices of vegetables and fruit by 10,7% and 6,7%, respectively.
The prices of animal products increased by 1,5%, largely due to the increase in prices of milk by 18,2%.
The prices of slaughtered stock remained unchanged, while those of poultry meat decreased slightly by 0,3%.
The prices paid for farming requisites, including machinery and implements, material for fixed improvements and intermediate goods and services increased by 3,6% for the period ended March 2021.
Prices of feeds increased by 6,9%, seeds by 6,7%, building material by 5,8%, trucks by 4,4%, animal health and crop protection by 3,8%, fertilisers by 3,7%, packaging material by 3,0%, fencing material by 2,9%, maintenance and repairs by 2,4% and tractors by 1,6%.
Domestic terms of trade increased by 1,5% from 1,03 to 1,05 due to improved prices that were earned from agricultural products.
Net farm income and cash flow
The increase of 15,8% in gross farming income and 6,6% in expenditure on production inputs led to a substantial increase of 36,1% in net farming income, which was boosted by higher prices. Rent payment increased by 3,0%, labour remuneration by 2,9% and interest payments by 2,3%.
The farmers’ cash flow increased significantly by 35,6% and is estimated at R132 029 million, compared to R97 377 million the previous period.
Conclusion
The increase in gross farming income was mainly driven by the increase in income from field crops and horticultural products by 38,7% and 17,6%, respectively. The increase in income was influenced by the increase of 6,4% in production levels, especially of field crops and prices by 5,3%.

FRESH PRODUCE MARKETS OVERVIEW
FRESH MARKET STATISTICS AND GRAPHIC PRESENTATION OF SEASONAL FLUCTUATIONS IN QUANTITIES AND PRICES OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES SOLD ON THE MAJOR FRESH PRODUCE MARKETS
The purpose of this overview is to show the short-term price and volume trends (seasonal fluctuations) of various types of fruit and vegetables sold on major fresh produce markets and to make comparisons between the markets.
Market prices are determined by the interaction between supply and demand, which is influenced by various factors. Supply factors include climate, seasonal production, perishability of products and producers’
reaction to prices realised in preceding periods, etc. Demand factors include consumer preferences, substitution between products and per capita income. Therefore, the seasonal pattern of quantities sold and prices realised may differ considerably among the various markets.
The graphs in this overview depict the trends for fruit and vegetables sold on the Tshwane Fresh Produce Market and give an indication of the variations in monthly volumes sold and prices received, based on the average for the five-year period 2016 to 2020.
Detailed information regarding the specific varieties of fruit and vegetables sold on the markets is available on request from:

Interesting Herb: Sage
Common names: garden sage; sage; true sage; salvia fina; salvia real; sauge; sauge officinale Scientific names: Salvia officinalis
History: Sage has a very long and rich history due to both its medicinal and culinary uses. At one time, the French produced bountiful crops of sage which they used as a tea. The Chinese became enamoured with French sage tea, trading four pounds of Chinese tea for every one pound of sage tea. In 812 AD, sage was one of the plants deemed so important that Charlemagne ordered it planted on German Imperial farms, no doubt due to the lucrative trade business and for its medicinal popularity as well.
In ancient Rome, sage was considered to have substantial healing properties, particularly helpful in the digestion of the ubiquitous fatty meats of the time and was deemed a part of the official Roman pharmacopeia.
The herb was used to heal ulcers, to help stop the bleeding of wounds and to soothe a sore throat. Many people in China used sage to treat colds, joint pain, typhoid fever and kidney and liver issues.
Description: Sage is a perennial shrub in the family Lamiaceae grown for its aromatic leaves which are used as herbs. Sage can be erect or grow along the ground and possesses a dense arrangement of woody stems with broad, elliptical, silvery-green leaves which are arranged alternately on the stems. The plant produces blue, pink or white flowers on a stalk. Sage plants generally grow up to 40 – 70 cm (16 – 28 in) in height and can live to be 15–20 years old, although they are usually replaced after four to five years in a garden when they become woody. Sage may also be referred to as common sage and originates from the Balkan Peninsula.
Cultivation: Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a hardy perennial that tastes aromatic and slightly bitter. It is easy to grow and only need three major requirements—plenty of sunshine, good drainage and good air circulation.
Sage grows well in a variety of climates, and it can survive in temperatures as low as -18 °C (0 °F). It looks pleasant in a garden and grows pretty purple, pink, blue or white flowers in summer. When harvested and dried, it can be used as a stuffing for poultry, rabbit, pork and baked fish, and can also be used in sausages or meat loaves. One should learn how to grow sage to always have some readily on hand.
Food uses: Frying a strong herb like sage mellows its flavour. Fried sage can be crumbled over a dish at the last moment to heighten flavour. Sage can also be used to add an aromatic taste to sauces, compound butters, meat marinades, pastries and breads. Fresh sage leaves can be added to cocktails and teas for an instant hit of herbal flavour.
