This edition of ORiON contains a single contributed research paper, titled “A grid-based humanitarian logistics solution”, by Olivier and Kruger. This paper addresses the many and varied problems encountered when attempting to find optimal traversable routes for humanitarian logistic functions. A matrix maze generation approach is suggested in order to address this problem.

This issue contains a discussion paper, titled “Development of an early career academic supervisor in Statistics - a discussion on a guiding rubric”, by Fabris-Rotelli, Von Maltitz, Smit, Das, Roberts, Maribe, Maposa and Corrˆea. This work is the result of a collaboration between academics from five different universities and provides valuable guidance for supervisors in the field of statistics. This discussion is followed by nine papers providing comments on the discussion. These papers originate from a wide range of South African universities and include comments made by practitioners. The discussion paper, comments and rebuttal provide a holistic view of supervision in the discipline of statistics at South African universities.

I would like to thank the authors of the papers for submitting their research to ORiON and the reviewers for their time and effort. Finally, I wish to extend my sincere thanks to Ms Elzanie Bothma, the journal manager, and Mrs Jeanne Mari´e Coetzee, the typesetter, for all of their efforts in order to make this issue possible.
