The Norwegian Government will take steps to implement the Agreement of October 30, 1959 concerning Orwey Station. The following draft represents the text of the Treaty approved by the Conference on 21 November 1959, except in the case of Articles V (Nuclear Activities) and XIII (Accession), which have not yet been agreed by the Heads of Delegations . . ii) The following draft does not include the minor language and style changes that have been made. The Government of Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, the Union of South Africa, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America.
Convinced that the establishment of a solid basis for the continuation and development of such cooperation on the basis of the freedom of scientific investigation in Antarctica as applied during the International Geophysical Year is in accordance with the interests of science and the progress of all humanity;. Convinced also that a treaty ensuring the use of Antarctica exclusively for peaceful purposes and the continuation of international harmony in Antarctica will further the purposes and principles contained in the Charter of the United Nations; In order to promote international cooperation in scientific research in Antarctica, as provided for in Article II of this Treaty, the Contracting Parties agree that, to the greatest extent possible: nnd practicable:.
In carrying out this article every encouragement will be given to the. establishment of cooperative organizations for relations in these specialized agencies of the United Nations and international organizations with a scientific or technical interest in Antarctica. A renunciation by a Contracting Party of previously exercised rights to or acquisition of essential sovereignty in Antarctica; the renunciation or reduction by a Contracting Party of any basis for achieving territorial sovereignty in Antarctica. starctica which may be the result either of its activities or of its natural activities in 1.ntarctica or otherwise.
