Our Motto:

"Do not unto others, what you would not have others do unto you."

"A little child shall lead them." -Isaiah xi., 6.

P.O. Box 2000, Cape Town.

My Dear Little Cousins,

In the early days of Israel, the people '"ere constantly being led astray from the wor- shipping of one God into idolatry because they lived so close to such worshippers.

The Midianites had overrun the country so that people were afraid to thrash their own corn or tend their own flocks.

One night a young man named Gideon, who had seen all his brothers killed by the Midianites, was thrashing his corn in secret. As he worked he thought that an angel appeared to him, who charged him to save Israel from the hands of its enemies.

Gideon replied, "I am not Moses to rescue Israel. My family is the poorest in Manas- seh and I am the least in my father's house- The angel, however, repeated his message and Gideon was inspired to answer the call.

The first thing he did was to destroy the allars of Baal, which his own father had built to the idol. In the morning when it was found that he had done it, the people demanded that his father allow the boy to be put to death. The older man, however, '\\as now ashamed of having built an altar of this idolatrous nature and so he said,

'' 1 d you plead fo1 Baal? If h h a god

let him plead for himself."

The p ople were silenced b this rebuk<' because their con ciences told them that if Baal could do nothing he could not be the true God. In this way Gideon won his first 'ictory which ·was later made part of his name. He was called Jerub-Baal which means, "Let Baal plead."

The Flag.

I think I know why white and blue Were made the colours of the Jew, For many things both good and brh~ht,

Are coloured either blue or white.

For blue there's violets and skies, And then the sea, and baby's eyes, For white, the Shabbos cloth, the snow, And my best suit with fancy bow- And white means good, and blue meani true, So they're the colour of the Jew.
