A GENERou~· .JEWISH KNIGHT.
I have often referred in this column to the most generous con- tributions made to charitable insti- tutionL, hospitals, etc., by Mr. Bern- hard Baron, the tobacco magnate of )fessrs. Carerra , London, a refer- ence to '\\'hom is made elsewhere in this issue. This millionaire cigar- ette manufacturer ha· been lavish in

ROUMANIA
A report by the .J ewi h Tele- graphic Agency, dealing with the action of the Roumanian Govern- ment in persi ting in its intention to make law a certain mea. ure effecting the organised J ewi ~h communities in
tha~ country, i.:- featmed elsewhere in this issue. The conflict has as-
"' urned a mo t violent form and the Jewish members of the Roumanian legislature are fighting the measure tooth and nail. The Jewish Parlia- mentary representatives who were returned under a11 election pact with the pre. ent Government Party, a8 well as other Jewish representati Ye bodies in the countrr, like the Union of Roumanian Jews. have entered

the arena, and in their attack on the Government they have .the sup- port of the Liberal , Averescuite , Socialist , etc. In the mea ure i detectrd an attempt to destroy the organi. ed Jewish comm uni ties of Roumania, and a keen and protract- ed firrht is anticipated.
THE INTE~TJON OF THE LA\Y.
The law about which the contro- Yersy is raging was dealt with by :M. Vlad, the :Minister of Public 'Yor hip, in his inteniew with Mr~
.J acoh Landau, i.he managing direc- tor of the J.T.A., in June. The .Jewish religion, the ~Iinister then said, i ~ officially recogni. ed in Rou- mania and is on an equal level with the other religions. Religious liberty and freedom of con cience are guar- anteed to every inhabitant. The la,,·
which regulate· the organi ation of comm uni ties will be modified in order to allow the Orthodox Jews to organise eparately, and to form their own comm uni ties distinct from tho e of the less Orthodox Jews ( N eolog). It is true, he added, that onl'r the J ewi ·h com- munity in. Tran yhania is diYided into these t\\'O groups. The Orthodox Jews in Tran ylvania refuse under any circumstances to join in one community with the les Orthodox Jews. It would be con- trary to the law of religious liberty and of freedom of conscience if the~·
were to be compelled to join a unified (Continued on page 490).
