The last fortnight has produced quite a crop of minor events, which have been of interest to one or other ection of the community-more particularly the young people-in both the social and cultural spheres.

The true index to the vitality of a community is not to be judged by SOJ?le hectic effort occurring spasmodically but by .the wa~ time and energy are utilised by smail gr?ups m the mtervals .between community-wide enter- i;>nses. Exct:;pt for war-like purposes, it is impractiC'able for large bodies of people constantly to come together if the effort demanded be a continuous one. One has, therefore to lQok at the mall clusters of people who naturally gravi- tate to each other for one or other object.

The Students' Jewish Association provided another pleasant evening on aturday, 23rd August; this time cal- ling upon its own members to provide the fare. Under the style of a Literary ymposium, four students: Miss Berelowitz and Messrs. Fortes, Aronowitz anrl Lewint.. each gave a short paper on "Aspects of J wi h Life." While ome papers dealt with the ubject generally, others con- fined themselves to certain types of Jews with which thev hatl 'apparently come into contact. If • criticism may

b

attemptetl, it might be said that thero was a tendency to turn the individual into a type, and to draw general con- clu ions, of a more or le sweeping nature, from particular

~-periences. Wider reading should prove a useful correc- t1ve.

· For the past seven years or so, nnolJtrusively, yet diligently. much u eful work has been put in by the Cape- town Jewi h Girl Guides, under the leadership of l\Iiss F.

On l\fon<lay, 25th, they were delighted to welcome Miss Sa.llv Ku ~01, who returned from the l~Jmpire meeting of Guines held at Wembley. Miss Ku. sel is captain of thP ,fo~>ish troop at Oudtsboorn, and had the di. tinction of 1lPmg one of about 30 rcpre entative l!Uide · . ent from .A.

he was naturally full of her experiences. and found a rea·lv audienC'e for her views in the local .Jewish troop which gatherf'd to hear her leC'ture the following evening. Much Yalnable information which she glenned at the sPmi-inter- national meeting was imparted, and no doubt will lead to

<'lrnnges and improvements in local methoflc:;. An int<'r<"st- inP' point sbf't mPntionE'd was that on th<' Friday night the half dozen J E>wish girls of the 12.000 in camn, repair d to the h•nt of tlH• Palestininn contingent (four in nmn her), whN thPv snt {lnwn to a Sabbath repast, with Kiddush :rnd rn.ndles complete.

ThP orE>vious evening tne Guides held a sma11 dance at the Old 8~nagog-nP. nt which the vic;itor was thf' g\1Pc;t of honour. Tne ~m::ill charCYe m::ine nroviclcd a useful addi- tion, one understands, to troop funds.

On the S:rlurday evening previous, the Guides paid kindly attention to the ch'lrtrf>n of th<' Orph'ln:tge. Thev tnrnPd UP in forcf> and regaled the children, with song and chorus, dance and story, in a way which Guidrs have.

There can be no doubt of their audiPnr<''s apnreciation.

On Sunday, August 31st, the Zionist Ha11 was well aft.ended when 1\ir. "Baruch Coben, who came from Pale - tine a couple of years ago, gave an interPc;ting lecture in Yiddish on " Young Hebrew Poetry." The lectur was held under the auspices of the Dorshei Zion Asi:;ociation.

The lectnrer confined himself to the three outstanding figures, Bialik, 'fchernirhowsky fln<l Z'llman Sr·hnair, fin 1 clPalt mainly with the first two. He ably brought out their differPnce<;-the Nationa.lic;m of Bi:ilil{, who clrm'· hie; mattC'r and inspiration from ancient .Jewish ources, history and legend, and the Naturism of Tchernichowsky, who sought beauty, and took his subjects from any source possessing
