JIMM says no to rape

Lentswe, Orkney - The Orkney Magistrates’ Court deferred the case against Tebogo Sepale (43) to June 26.

He appeared on charges of statutory rape on Wednesday May 17. He is still in custody and it is expected that he will apply for bail at his next court appearance.

According to Henry Mamothame, NPA spokesperson, the accused appointed a private attorney to represent him in the matter. The state will oppose his bail application. He said the state is awaiting further details on the investigation to possibly add more charges against the accused.

Sepale, a Matlosana Councillor, is facing eleven provisional charges, two for statutory rape, three for the violation of a child with consent, one for manufactu- ring pornographic material, four for rape and one for sexual intimidation.

Members of the Jouberton Interdenominational men in ministry (JIMM) gathered at the Orkney Magistrate’s court to show their discontent in the actions of a local so-called prophet.

JIMM is an organization comprising men from different church organizations in Jouberton.

“We have noticed with great concern and disappointment the silence of Chris- tian men in our community regarding

the abuse of women and children by some of our men. Our silence as men is synonymous with us condoning and participating in this evil doing,” said George Mokhele, spokesperson.

“As men of faith we unequivocally condemn and detest this evil conduct especially by a person who is supposed to be a mentor, an exemplar and a tower of refuge to the community members instead he is the one who vi- olates and discourage their confidence in him. As the JIMM organization we are saying he doesn’t deserve to be part of our community but deserve to be in jail. We would like to call upon all men to show solidarity and support to these boys. Not in our name! Real men don’t rape! No to women and children abuse!”

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The North West has more adults out of work and not looking for employment than people who are employed, with an unemployment rate of 54%.

This is closely followed by Mpuma- langa with an unemployment rate of 49.7%.

South Africa’s unemployment rate trended upwards in the first quarter of 2023 amid the inflated cost of liv- ing, rising interest rates, increasing fuel prices, and worsening load shed- ding.

The latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QFLS), published by Statis- tics South Africa on Tuesday May 16, shows that official unemployment increased by 0.2 percentage points from 32.7% in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 32.9% in the first quarter of 2023.

According to the QFLS, the num- ber of unemployed persons in South Africa increased to 7.9 million in the first quarter of 2023.

The survey results indicate that 179,000 jobs were lost between the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023. During the same time, however, the working-age pop- ulation increased by 141,000 or 0.3%

in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the fourth quarter of 2022.

The number of people who were not economically active for reasons other than discouragement de- creased by 209 000 to 13.2 million.

The discouraged work-seekers de- creased by 87 000 in the first quar- ter of 2023 compared to the fourth quarter of 2022, resulting in a net decrease of 296 000 in the not eco- nomically active population.

Lentswe, Orkney - The Orkney Mag- istrates’ Court has set aside judgment on Sibusiso Kula’s (34) bid to have his murder case withdrawn.

The defence brought forward an ap- plication to have the murder charges struck off the court roll. They argued that his rights were not explained to him, and thus can be used against him in a subsequent trial. They further questioned the charges levelled against their client.

The state prosecutor, Adv Phuti Se- koadi, opposed the application and argued that the matter is still under in- vestigation and that the current charges are properly drafted, as they are in line with the evidence in the docket.

He further explained that when inves- tigations are completed, the state will decide whether the charges should be amended.

Sekoadi urged the court to dismiss the application as it had no bearing on the charges levelled against the ac-

cused.

Kula is currently out on R50 000 bail, granted by the High Court of South Africa North West Division, following his appeal on the Orkney Magistrates’

Court decision to deny him bail. He was ordered to surrender his passports, report twice a day at the nearest police station, provided the investigating of- ficer with his work itinerary, and report to investigating officer if he must move outside his residential jurisdiction and have no direct or indirect contact with his children.

Meanwhile, an application submitted to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, for the matter to be trans- ferred to a higher court, owing to its serious nature, is being processed. In- vestigations are nearing completion as the state prepares for trial.

Kula is expected back in court on Monday May 22, where judgment is ex- pected to be passed.

and later discovered in a garage in Ext 21, Jouberton.

The case was postponed to May 30 for further investigation.
