JOHA ESBURG DAY BY DAY.
(Continued from Page 711.) established that an Ricbeeck s arrival wa only rendered possible bv the actiYitie and financial upport of the Dutch East India Company, which con i ted of Jew , among others.
Alluding to the activities of the Jews in South African commerce and indu~try, Mr. Kentridge, amid applause, declared that they had made a valuable contribution to the development of the country- and that they were no more alien here than the Briti h or the Dutch, because, their entry and their activities were almo t . imultaneous with tho e of the other white races here. The commercial de elopment of South Africa, he con- tended, was very largely made pos- ible bv the Jews, and it could not be denied that in the development of the gold mining indu try they had played an important part. The same wa now applicable to the agricul- tural indu Lry, for recently an official of the Agricultural Department had informed "him that some of the most up-to-date farmers in South Africa were Jew .
Dr. Landau 'then delivered hi lec- ture on "Modern Jewish Hi tory' in the course of which he declared that the happening during the last one hundred and fifty years over-
hadowed, for importance and in- tere t, the previous one hundred and fifty decades. At the conclu ion several of his statements were challenged by the Rev. E. M. Levy, of Durban and other delegate but the entire e\ening was both int re t- ing and edifying.
A HA DSOME PRESE T.
The Council of the United Hebre\
Congregation of Johannesburg have decided to celebrate the occasion of the ilver wedding of their Chief Rabbi and Mrs. Landau, which \vill take place on the 29th inst., by making their "" piritual head and his con- sort " a pre ent of a motor ar and a letter above the signatures of the joint secretarie to the congregation is being de patched to all members.
It is a id that the pos 'e::;sion of a motor car will enable him lo move freely and peedily among memb rs of hi large flock to whom he has to mini ter in joy and in orrow. The gift, it is felt, should be a popular one, and it i hoped that practically e\'ery men1ber of the congregation will be associated with it, and to en ure thi~ the Council ha resolv d to accept any contrihution from s~.
