World of Warcraft (WoW) alone has an estimated eight million account holders, making it the largest massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in the world.

Chapter Two

Literature Review

Many of the ideas that are said to threaten the concept of community (or transformative communities) have been conceived as symbolic or symptomatic of late-modern (or post-modern) society (Giddens, 1991). This can also be seen in the relationship between the rich and the poor, and the educated and the uneducated. Dungeons & Dragons (abbreviated as D&D, DnD, or AD&D for advanced edition) is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game (RPG) published by Wizards of the Coast.

In 1977, a second edition of the game, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (abbreviated as AD&D), was introduced.

Chapter Three

Research methods and methodology

To do a thematic analysis on any such "text", the text is coded or broken down into manageable categories at a variety of levels: word, phrase, phrase, themes and then examined using one of the basic methods of content analysis , conceptual analysis or relational analysis (Jacob, 2006). 65 Thematic analysis focuses on looking at the occurrence of selected items within a text or texts although the terms can be implicit as well as explicit (Jacob, 2006). David Winter ( 1992) consider that the thematic analysis enables the researcher to use a wide variety of information, such as behavioral samples, interviews, videotaped encounters, simulations, transcripts of speeches, personal diaries and so on.

Although researchers believe that thematic analysis is most useful in the early stages of the research inquiry process, such as the pilot phase, it can be useful at all stages. Boyatzis (1998) says that during the pre-discovery or formulation of the research agenda, thematic analysis enables the researcher to access a wide variety of phenomenological information as an inductive start to research. For a scholar, thematic analysis enables the collection or use of qualitative information in a way that facilitates communication with a wide audience of other scholars or researchers, according to Boyatzis (1998).

Boyatzis (1998) argues that the ability to use thematic analysis appears to involve a number of basic skills or competencies. The challenge for the qualitative researcher is to use thematic analysis to extract the wealth of themes in the raw data without reducing knowledge to a trivial level for the sake of consistency of judgment. When using thematic analysis, each researcher must develop their own unique set of codes.

Chapter Four

Data Section

Most participants said they have an average of five to six high-level meaningful avatars (online identities). If so, which one) – All participants said they belong to a guild; this allowed them to reach such a high level in the game. 80% of participants said that the way their avatar was dressed had an effect on the way they were able to play the game.

Do you just play the game or are you apart of the games online community. Most of the participants said that they enjoy the sense of camaraderie that comes from belonging to the online community. Like being a part of the online community, they will have to play the game to interact with the other members in the community.

The second male participant stated, “My brother is very antisocial sometimes, he sits in his room for hours and plays WoW while only talking to his in-game friends.” The last participant said: “I believe that this kind of gaming can only have an effect on the gamer if he/she lives more in the game than in real life. By this I mainly mean socializing and communicating with the friends he/she has online. ”. A few participants said they feel like leaders in the game: they are more confident and in control of the situation. All participants said that they use their main character most, if not most of the time.

Chapter Five

Discussion

Some gamers even say that they feel obligated to play, but more that they need to play to progress in the game and stay safely rooted in their guild. On the other hand, however, some players felt that it was the achievement system that kept them interested in the game: “It provides additional features and challenges to the game”. Many of the players of these online games become addicted to in-game achievements, which leads them to want more and more, increasing their playing time and dedication to the game.

All the players agree that it is always nice to feel powerful and in control in the game. The player does something and the game does something back which encourages the player to act again. As in the game of WoW, the players can take different routes and make his own decisions in the game.

In some games, players are able to customize the game to suit their learning and play styles. Members of these online communities usually share common interests and knowledge about the game and the characters. It's clear that viewers of those who play the game feel like too much fun in a game like WoW can have some serious consequences in what happens outside of the game.

Conclusion

Thompson (1995) refers to the globalization of communication noting that one of the salient features of communication in the modern world is that it takes place on a scale that is increasingly global. In the game, through their avatar they can choose who they really want to be, and be seen as. Most of the study participants explained that they have up to five different characters on average, but always come back to or play more with their main character - the character they started with.

One of the players explained that he is a level 80 character, which is the highest level in the game and his boss. If they are sometimes persistent enough that digital identity spills over into real life, not in the sense of living as their online character, but in the sense of making themselves feel more confident in their own skin. In the end, a game like WoW can teach the user a lot about what it means to be part of a community as well as themselves.

Used properly, a game like WoW can be an asset to the user, providing a network of culture, friendship, exploration, experimentation, and global citizenship. When talking about WoW, their characters and friends online, all the boys in the focus group spoke with animated expressions and jesters. Online games and virtual communities have their pros and cons and can be argued both ways, but if the gamer has a healthy balance between their real life and their online life, being part of such an environment will not ultimately harm the user.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

  • Objectives of and need for the study
  • Questions to be answered in the research
  • Research approach/ methods
  • Proposed work plan

An empirical study will be conducted, analyzing existing textual data on the various relevant theories on the concept of identity, virtual reality and the virtual community. Primary data is collected through interviews, focus groups and personal learning logs. Twenty interviews32 will be conducted, which will consist of a snowball sample group of Durban teenagers aged 15 to 18 years.

Ten teenagers who play virtual reality online computer games will be interviewed and the other ten interviews will be of those who do not play online games but know someone who does. Open-ended questions will be asked, which in turn will give me a broader idea of their ideas and feelings towards online gaming and other issues. The focus group will be a small group of ten teenagers from the interview group, five who play the online game and five who do not.

This will be done in the hope of generating debate and different opinions from those who play the online games and those who do not. The focus group questions will be the same as the interview questions - but will allow for a greater debate among the teenagers. This will enable me to investigate whether certain people's opinions change due to the fact that other people will be present.

Analyse research

Will any of the following instruments be used for data collection purposes: YES NO. In the subsequent dissemination of your research findings - in the form of a completed thesis, oral presentations, publication, etc. Do you play or use any virtual reality desktop games, if so, which ones.

Do you have to subscribe monthly to play the game, if so how much. Do you find this type of virtual gaming problematic or is it more the interaction with other players that has appeal. Do you think this medium offers more freedom of expression than face-to-face communication?

Do you play or use any virtual reality desktop games, if so, which ones and why? If you are a parent of someone who plays WoW, do you pay for them to play every month? 149 Do you think this type of game has had any kind of impact on the player's work/concentration in real life.
