Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - The Miss South Africa Top 30 contes- tants met in Johannesburg at the week- end for final judging.
The 30 hopefuls are an impressive and diverse group and include an estate agent, a corporate lawyer, a veterinarian, a forensic science graduate, teachers, models, entrepreneurs and law students.
They come from all over South Africa with Gauteng leading the field with 13 contestants (with three from Soweto and two from Tshwane); the Western Cape has five; KwaZulu Natal has four; the Eastern Cape is represented by three women; the Free State has
two as has the North West and there is one from Lim- popo.
The Miss South Africa pageant proudly returns to Gauteng, with the 2022 winner set to be crowned at Sun International’s flagship venue, the SunBet Arena at Time Square, Pretoria.
Miss South Africa 2022 pageant promises to be a spectacular and entertain- ment-packed show and will fittingly take place during Women’s Month, on Satur- day, August 13. As in pre- vious years, it will also be broadcast live on M-Net and Mzansi Magic and streamed for an international audience on the Miss South Africa app.
The Top 10 women going through to the finals will be announced this week via
the Miss South Africa App, which can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play store. View- ers can access the Top 30 contestants final interview as well as watch the live announcement of the Top 10. Judges are radio presenter and personality and Miss South Africa 2015 Liesl Laurie, body positive activist Tracey-Lee Lusty Horwitz, Dentsu CEO Koo Govender, fashion designer Khosi Nkosi, True Love Editor-in-Chief, Makhosazana Zwane-Siguqa, actor Simoné Nortmann and actor and TV personality Thando Thabethe.

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - Take Alabama Back presents a fun day on Youth Day, June 16.
The event will take place in collaboration with the Sanpark Drug Rehab Centre.
The event will be held at the Grace Community Church, Alec Street and the entrance fee is R10 per child and R20 per adult.
They promise lots of fun such as face painting, a jumping castle, fun and games and a movie.
They will also have a potjiekos competition (R75 per entry), and a guest speaker and music.
You can all do some shopping as there will be stalls. They are inviting people to have stalls and sell their goods. A stall will set you back R100.
All this fun will start at 09:00.

Klerksdorp Midweek, Tigane - Kefilwe Mandisa Homani is a SASCE ABC Motsepe soprano soloist provincial champion from Gaenthone Secondary School.
She will be representing the pro- vince at the national champion- ship this month.

“Mr Mageba”, I won all the com- petitions I’ve taken part in.
“I now believe that I was born for greatness. I know that I stand
the chance to be a champion,” she said.
Choir manager, Mr Xaba: ”I am very proud of her. She will not only be representing the school but the province. The journey has been a roller-coaster ride but at the end we managed to win through hard work and dedication. It feels great to manage a winning team because after all it is a competi- tion and we all want to win.

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - Thembi Man- gena (19) is a Miss Teen Southern Africa Finalist 2022.
She is currently doing her first year in nursing.
“Pageantry is something I’ve always been passionate about and a lot people would always tell me I’d do very great in modelling which grew my love for pageantry even more. This is my second competition. The first was the RCS, which was a local competition held in Khuma. I made it to the top 5 and I am very proud of myself that I made it that far for my first time and gained some expe- rience. I partici- pated in it in 2020 during my matric year,” she said.
She loves help- ing people as it fills her heart with joy when she is able to lend a
helping hand to people who need it. “I was at the Khaya Tshepo home of children to help the precious children. It was such an amazing initia- tive and I had the most fun.”
Thembi entered this compe- tition because she feels like it gives her the great opportu- nity to inspire young people
and allows her to show generosity and kindness to people around her and to give back to the community.
“This platform also allows me to clear off the misconception of pageantry that it’s not only about beauty, how you dress, the glitz and glam.
It’s also about your capability to give back to your community and spread love and kindness to others, to teach- ers others about loving themselves and believing they can achieve all their dreams.”

Noughts vs crosses
Noughts + Crosses is a British dra- ma television series based on the Noughts & Crosses novel series by Malorie Blackman.
The series is set in an alter- native history where black
“Cross” people rule over white
“Noughts”.
The series will start on M-Net at 22:35 on Youth Day June 16.
The series differs from the book in several respects. Callum and Sephy are older than in the novels, and Callum and Jude’s sister Lynette McGregor does not feature in the series.
The series takes place in present-day London in an alternative history where 700 years prior, several nations in (what is in our world known as) West Africa combined to form the powerful Aprican Empire and went on to colo- nise Europe.
After a conflict known as the Great World War, control of Europe is split between different Aprican factions, with mainland Europe under control of the Malian Empire and the Moors,
whereas Albion (comprising Great Britain and Ireland) and
parts of Scandinavia remain under the thumb of the Apri- can Empire.
Russia and the Balkans re- main in active conflict with the Aprican colonisers, al- though since the Great World War their national borders have been pushed back.
The Ottoman Empire also exists, con- trolling parts of East Asia.
Albion appears to be a self-governing colony with its own (Cross) Prime Mi- nister and executive leadership, an exclusively Cross police force, and a military only just opened up to a small number of Nought high-achievers.
However, it is still accountable to the Aprican Empire based on the African continent.
As of 1950, racial segregation is rigidly enforced in the colony between those of wealthy Aprican descent (known as Crosses or daggers) and the poorer na- tive Europeans (known as Noughts or blankers).

Die meeste van ons het al die term
“mindfulness” gehoor. In Afrikaans noem ons dit “bewustelikheid” - maw om bewustelik te lewe. Afrikaans.com het met die skrywer en meditasie-in- strukteur Johannes de Villiers gesels.
Johannes het reeds twee boeke spesifiek oor bewustelikheid geskryf.
Sy jongste boek, Meer as jou seerkry, is gebaseer op die insig wat hy verwerf het toe sy eie lewe uitmekaar geval het. Hy gesels met “deskundiges en terapeute, maar ook gewone mense wat deur die lewe platgevee is”. Hierdeur kom hy tot die slotsom dat groei wel kan plaasvind, al is ’n mens stukkend.
MAAR WAT IS BEWUSTELIKHEID?
Johannes sê dat bewustelikheid verwys na die stilwordpraktyke wat oor eeue heen in baie wysheidstradisies onderrig is. “Die laaste 30 tot 40 jaar het daar toenemend onder Westerse sielkundiges en terapeute ’n belangstelling opgeduik in hoe dié tegnieke mense kan help om hul eie gevoelens, gedagtes en lewe beter te bestuur.
“Die kern van bewustelikheid is meditasie, die tegnieke waarmee mens bewustelikheid inoefen. Deur oefeninge te doen waarin jy jou vermoë slyp om jou aandag in die realiteit te fokus eerder as in die geraas in jou kop, kweek ’n mens ’n tipe rustigheid, deernis en later ook wysheid.”
IS DAAR STEEDS ’N STIGMA VERBONDE AAN MEDITASIE EN
SOORTGELYKE TEGNIEKE?
“In die verlede was mense half bang vir meditasie omdat baie mense gemeen het as jy mediteer gaan jy by ’n sekte moet aansluit of in snaakse tale praat. Soos wat mense egter gaandeweg begin besef het dis net ’n doodgewone oefening vir jou brein en gemoed se gesondheid (soos wat jy jou lyf se spiere in ’n gym sal oe- fen) het mense meer ontvanklik geraak.”
NIEMAND IS GEVRYWAAR VAN EMOSIONELE
SWAARKRY NIE Johannes sê dat hoewel hy reeds jare lank mediteer, boeke oor die onder-
werp geskryf het, en so meer, dit hom nie immuun gemaak het teen emosionele swaarkry en pyn nie. Covid het hom genoodsaak om sy joga-ateljee en gastehuis te sluit en in 2021 het hy in ’n diepe hartseer verval oor sy lewe wat so anders uitge- draai het as wat hy dit wou hê. Hier was hy - ‘n man in sy veertigs, werkloos, en sy drome aan skerwe.
HOE ERVAAR ANDER PYN EN
SEERKRY?
Johannes vertel dat hy nie net op sy eie kennis en ervaring steun nie, maar om vir ’n boek al die wyse mense wat hy ken, op te soek en hulle oor hul insigte te vra. Hierdie insigte deel hy dan in sy boeke. Vir dié jongste boek oor seer- kry het hy dus ’n magdom mense gaan opsoek wat deur trauma en hartseer is, en hulle gevra: “Hoe oorleef jy in jou stukkende lewe?”
Die mense met wie hy gesels het, was uiteenlopend: Een is as kind seksueel aangerand. Een is op ’n jong ouderdom deur ’n beroerte gestrem gelaat. Een leef met MIV. Een is deur ’n kaper ontvoer.
Een is in die openbaar verneder. En talle ander. Almal moes met iets leer saamleef wat hul lewe omgedop het.
POST-TRAUMATIESE GROEI:
HOE DOEN ’N MENS DIT?
“Een van die vernaamste vereistes om so te kan groei, is dat jy by ’n plek van aanvaarding van jou nuwe lewe moet kom. As teenspoed jou tref, beteken dit
’n ou lewe (’n ou huwelik of ou werk of ou gesondheid) het verlore gegaan. Jy gaan nooit weer terugbons na die mens wat jy voorheen was nie. En vir baie mense is dit moeilik om dit te aanvaar.
Hulle lewe word oorheers deur die drang om weer na hul ou lewe terug te keer.
Hulle is bitter oor wat hulle nie meer het nie.
“Dis verstaanbaar. Maar bewuste- likheid/mindfulness leer ons dat groei net kan plaasvind in die werklikheid waarin jy jou hier en nou bevind, nie in die verlore lewe wat nie meer bestaan
nie. So jy moet rou, jy moet huil, jy moet indien nodig jou hare uit jou kop trek, maar op een of ander manier moet jy die realiteit in die gesig staar dat jou ou lewe verby is en nooit weer gaan terugkeer nie.
“Jy is nou in ’n nuwe lewe. Nie een wat jy gekies het nie. Nie een waarvoor jy aanvanklik weet hoe om dankbaar te wees nie. Maar hierdie lewe is die enigste plek waar jy kan groei en vir ander van diens kan wees.”
HOE KAN MEDITASIE HELP OM MET AANVAARDING TE GROEI EN TUIS TE KOM IN DIE
LEWE WAT JY TANS HET?
“Baie mense dink meditasie is om in ’n beswyming te gaan of jouself te hipno- tiseer of iets. Maar meditasie is net ’n tegniek om tuis te kom in die lewe- die onvolmaakte lewe - wat jy het. In party meditasies fokus jy op jou asemhaling, in party fokus jy op jou lyf, maar in al- mal gebruik jy tegnieke wat jou leer om nie in jou gedagtes weg te dryf na die lewe waarvoor jy wens nie, maar eerder tuis te kom in die lewe wat jy hét.”
RAAK STIL
“Ek sal almal aanmoedig om van tyd tot tyd stil te gaan staan as die lewe dol raak en net hul handpalm teen hul hart te hou. Voel die hitte van jou palm teen jou bors. Maak dalk jou oë toe as jy kan. Herinner jouself dat jy liefde nodig het in jou swaar tye en gee jouself van daardie liefde. Sê: Dis normaal om te sukkel. Dis normaal om soms spyt te wees. Dis normaal dat jou lewe anders lyk as die een waarop jy gehoop het.
“Die lewe werk meestal op die ou einde wel uit. Dit werk net nie heeltemal uit soos wat jy wou gehad het nie. Dit verg moed en geduld om dit te aanvaar. Maar as jy daarmee vrede kan maak, sal jy verstom wees oor die groeikrag wat daar in jou gebrokenheid skuil.”

Boek: Eddie’s Boy deur Thomas Perry Resensie deur Stefaans Coetzee
In 1983 wen Thomas Perry die Edgar Award for Best First Mystery Novel vir sy meester- stuk, The Butcher’s Boy.
Díe boek pryk in my versameling van top- 10 sluipmoordboeke. Amper 40 jaar later keer hy met Eddie’s Boy terug. Tonele van Keanu Reeves wat sukkel om te hardloop speel in my geestesoog af en alhoewel ek uitsien om weer iets van die ‘hitman’ Michael Schaeffer te lees, is ek bevrees hy is nou te oud.
Ter agtergrond. Michael, ’n weeskind, word deur die Pittsburgh-slagter en gesogte sluip- moordenaar, Eddie Mastrewski, grootgemaak.
Eddie onderrig hom in albei ambagte. Hoe om vleis te sny en spesiale aflewerings te doen, asook om die perfekte moordwapen vir La Cosa Nostra te word.
Meer mense sterf in The Butcher’s Boy as in
’n John Wick-film. Die boek eindig waar Mi- chael die Mafioso, vir Carlo Balacontano vir
’n moord ‘frame’ wat hy nie gepleeg het nie.
Carlo word lewenslank tronk toe gestuur en Michael vlug na Engeland. In Eddie’s Boy kom Carlo in aanmerking vir parool.
Eddie’s Boy open met die paragraaf: “Michael Schaeffer had not killed anyone in years, and he was enraged at the fact that he’d had to do it again tonight.” En net soos in Sleeping Dogs en The Informant, wat op The Butcher’s Boy volg, dwing figure uit sy geweldadige verlede hom om weer te moor.
Terwyl hy op sestigjarige ouderdom die jag- ters wat hom wil “uithaal” moet identifiseer, opspoor en doodmaak, leer ons meer oor sy verlede. Alhoewel ek van skop, skiet en don- ner hou, is dit juis die dieper kyk in die mens Michael wat my aan die lees hou.
Perry slag daarin om nuwe lesers sowel as Butcher’s Boy-volgelinge op hoogte te bring, nogtans beveel ek aan dat die vier boeke in vol- gorde gelees word. Selfs veertig jaar later skop Butcher’s Boy gat.

To understand the importance of this new ruling for many couples about to di- vorce (and for all couples about to marry), let’s start at the beginning - your three choices of “marital regime” on marriage.
You can marry in community of prop- erty: All of your assets and liabilities are merged into one “joint estate” in which each of you has an undivided half share.
On divorce or death the joint estate (includ- ing any profit or loss) is split equally be- tween you, regardless of what each of you brought into the marriage or contributed to it thereafter. This by the way is the “de- fault” regime - so you will automatically be married in community of property if you don’t specify otherwise before you marry.
You can marry out of community of property without the accrual system: Your own assets and liabilities, both what you bring in and what you acquire during the marriage, remain exclusively yours to do with as you wish.
You can marry out of community of prop- erty with the accrual system: Your own as- sets and liabilities remain solely yours. On divorce or death you share equally in the
“accrual” (growth) of your assets (with a few exceptions) during the marriage.
This ruling does not apply to you if your marriage was terminated by death or divorce prior to the judgment (which was handed down on May 11).
It does apply to you if your marriage is still in existence, and you chose to marry out of community of property . In other words if you are married out of commu- nity of property without accrual, and your marriage was concluded after 1 November 1984. Why that 1984 cut-off date? Well, what this High Court case was really all
about was the fact that where a marriage was concluded before 1 November 1984 (that’s when the new “Matrimonial Property Act”
took effect), courts had a discretion to make a “redistribution order” transferring assets between the divorcing spouses. But (until now) courts have had no such discretion for marriages concluded after the cut-off date.
It deprives couples married after the cut-off date of the opportunity to ask a court for a share of benefits acquired during the mar- riage, based on their respective contribu- tions (direct and indirect) “to the other’s maintenance and estate growth during the subsistence of the marriage”. In practice (until now), a spouse could be left destitute after spending decades contributing to a marriage and to the other spouse’s wealth.
Courts now have a very wide discretion to order a “redistribution” of assets between you and your spouse, ordering a transfer of assets and money from one spouse to ano- ther. That gives you the right to claim com- pensation for your contributions to the mar- riage, in other words to claim a fair share of wealth accrued during the marriage (assets brought into the marriage aren’t affected).
You will have to prove your case, show what you contributed, and convince the court that a redistribution in your favour is warranted.
The practical effect of such a redistribu- tion order “is that the party who contrib- uted to the other’s gain is compensated for its contribution to the extent that a court finds just and equitable. To this end, the court is cloaked with a wide discretion tak- ing into account an infinite variety of fac- tors.” Factors likely to be considered are each spouse’s respective contributions of time, services, savings of expenses, their current financial positions, what was agree, and the like – each case will be different.
The aim here is not to put the spouses into equal financial positions, the aim is to re- dress an unfair financial imbalance.
