A Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Celebration

The Teish Benefit and Benevolent Society

T

HE twenty-fifth anniversary of the Tel sh Benefit and Benevolent Society, the members of which consist of peop~e emanating from the town of Telsh m Lithuania or their children, was ce~e­

brated by a banquet followed by a social and dance held at the Selborne Hall on

Sunday evening. . .

The proceedings began with the praye1 for the repose of the souls o~ those members who had passed away, mtoned by Cantor S. Steinberg, of the Berea

Synagogue. .

Mr. I. Fine, Chairman of the Society, who presided, proposecl the t?ast of the Society in the course of which he out- lined its history for the last 25 years.

president was Mr. M. Gordon,. who \yas unable to be pres nt that evening owmg to ill-health. The ociety gran~ed free loans to memhers up to £70, wl11ch were repayable in small instalmen~s.. It also provided free doctor and me<lic1ne. The society had sent £700 some years ago for the relief of those who had suffered as a result of the fire in. their !1ative town of Telsh. During 1ts x1stence th_e society had loaned £30,000 to 700. apph~

cants. It had an accumulated capital oi

£2,000. The society owed its success chiefly to their hon. collectors, who sacrificed their leisure in order to collect the payments from memb .rs and thu.·

enabled them to cany on without ~p .rnl- ing a penny on collector's comm1s:10n.

London, June 13th.

strong appeal to Jew.· and Arabs in Pales- tine to sink their differences and to o- operate was made by Mr. Ramsay MacDonald when he open cl the Anglo-Palestine Exhibition in London.

The P1·ime Ministe · expressed agreement with the Marquis of Reading's earlier 1·emarks urging Jews and Ai·ab.· to co-ope1·ate in Pales- tin , adding: "It is going to be the salvation of both of you." l\fr. MacDonald said he hoped Arabs would not listen to those who divide them. In conclusion he paid a tribute to the great se1·vices the Jews had rendered civilii::- ation.

I\11. L Gab1iel, the Hon. Trea. urer, 11rnposed the toast of the gue ts. He pointed out that they had never rnfu. eel any application for loans, nor had they so far written off any bad debts. He thanked Mr. M. ReuYid, a President of the Chevra I a<lisha, for the assi:-tance iven bv him ancl he also paid a tribute to the work of their Chafrman, Mr. Fine, a.s \vell u.s to that of their Secretary, dr. SaroYitch.
