Owls in the spotlight at Birdlife Rustenburg
Rustenburg’s “owl nightlife” will be explored by Birdlife Rustenburg on Monday, 19 March 2018.
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - BirdLife Rustenburg will be holding its March meeting on Monday, 19 March. The meeting (with a difference) will take the form of an ‘Owl Evening’.
We will meet at the entrance to Kgaswane Nature Reserve at 18:15 for an 18:30 start.
Following a short discussion we will set off into the reserve with the express intention of locating some of our local nocturnal birds.
Hopefully these may include:
Owls: - Pearl Spotted Owlet, African Scops Owl, Southern White Faced Owl, Western Barn Owl, Spotted Eagle Owl, and possibly even Cape Eagle Owl.
Nightjars: Fiery Necked and Rufus Cheeked Nightjars; Thick Knee, Spotted Thick Knee. In previous years this event has been a great success and has attracted many members of the Rustenburg community.
It will be great fun and will present a rare opportunity to view the reserve in a different light (pun intended). The Kgaswane Rangers will be on hand in order to escort us to areas normally not accessible to the general public.
Normal entrance fees to the reserve will apply.
We will endeavour to use as few vehicles as possible by means of ‘doubling up’.
Tea and snacks will not be provided so you will need to bring along drinks and eats.
The event should conclude by 22:30.

Duimpie Den Kleuterskool se pragtige Pom-poms het tydens die onlangse Buffelspoort Karnaval by ATKV-Buffelspoort opgetree en sommer ‘n hele klompie harte gesteel. On Monday, 5 March the ladies of the Northam VLU made sandwiches for the learners of Laerskool Plati- na Primary School who had any polony, rooi worsies etc on their sandwiches in their lunch boxes. The learners could exchange their sandwiches with freshly made ones (without these products) as a safety precaution of the Listeriosis outbreak in the country. The school also gave out an information sheet in this regard. Please read this! It is better to be safe than sorry.

RUSTENBURG HERALD - NORTHAM - The Rustenburg Herald received the following information from disgruntled community members who marched to the Northam Platinum mine on Thursday, 8 March 2018.
According to the information received, the community has requested the mine to employ local residents in
Northam as well as to do business with local businesses in the area, boosting the local economy.
Residents allege that whenever a person takes his or her CV to the mine they are asked to pay a bribe in order to be hired whilst women are reportedly even requested to perform sexual favors together with the bribes. “The min does not have any programs to uplift the community especially local businesses. It does not hire local people and no recruitment office is present in Thabazimbi and Northam, only in
Rustenburg,” the community told the Herald.

Are you brave enough for crocodile?
Another crocodile tail for you Sir?
If you haven't pulled a face or a deep frown on your forehead when reading this, you're probably someone who is willing to experiment with different kinds and cuts of meat. And why not, even the Bible says "one shouldn't live of bread alone". Ok, we know this was meant in quite different context but you are getting the idea, don't you?
Those always on the look-out for a new experience or adventure, will be glad to hear that a local dealer right here in Kroondal, Rustenburg, recently became the first dealer in the North West Province for a very long time to stock and supply quite large quantities of crocodile meat. If you have up to now only experimented or tasted crocodile meat at exotic restaurants especially at overseas destinations, you now have the opportunity to do this locally and to, on behalf of the poor Mabalél of master Afrikaans poet Eugene Marais, take revenge for the thousands of crocodile attacks and killings throughout the ages.
Mr Frans du Plessis of Kroondal just outside Rustenburg decided to focus on dealing in meat for at least the past 12 months. Frans' head office is his home in Kroondal and naturally, he also deals in beef and mutton. But despite being rather
"new" in the industry, Frans recently decided to also focus on crocodile meat which is regarded a delicacy by many South Africans.
All the usual cuts are available - crocodile tail, crocodile kebabs, "eisbein", spare ribs, patties and crocodile sausages. And how is the taste? Well,
it is very similar to chicken and pork though not as "dry" as the former. With a little spot of chicken and porkspices, it is absolutely superb!
Do note however, that crocodile meat does not come cheap so its not meant as a staple. As a little snack served at a cocktail, it is perfect. Good news is that it is much healthier than the "conventional"
meats we know with a fat content of only 1.9%. It is ideal for cookings, braai, bake and even make a potjie and this time you really have an excuse not to invited your mother-in-law. Jolene Fourie at Rustenburg Herald is not a shy one and decided immediately to buy crocodile once it became available and you will surprised at the wonders she's achieved in the kitchen. If you don't like this - you really is
no meat lover - finish and kla... Jolene prepared her crocodile dish as follows:
Cut your crocodile meat in cubes, place in pressure cooker and cook for roughly 30 minutes. Remove, debone and place in ordinary frying pan. Add a little
Olive oil or ordinary cooking oil on top and garnish with Zesty Lemon & Herb spices as well as a spot of garlic and lemon juice. Pan fry for a few minutes on the stove and voila! Remove, allow to cool, garnish with fruit and veggies and serve. An article on Frans' crocodile meat
was recently published in Agri-Pulse, North West Newspapers' publication focusing on agriculture in the province.

Daar is ‘n episode van die gewilde Amerikaanse situasiekomedie (ook bekend as ‘n sitcom), ‘How I Met
Your Mother’, waartydens die karakters van hierdie storie die hele New York deur reis op soek na wat
beskryf word as die perfekte burger. Elke keer kry hul iets soortgelyks maar tog is daar net daardie
besonderse burger wat bo die res uitstaan.
Selfs in hierdie afdeling van die Rustenburg Herald is daar ook al in die verlede gesoek na
die perfekte toebroodjie.
Hierdie einste korrespondent het ook al
‘n soortgelyke gereg op die proef gestel en (tot onlangs) homself oortuig dat hy die beste burger in Rustenburg kan maak. Dit is, totdat hy hierdie week se resep geproe het – ‘n toebroodjie soos min, ‘n burger in
‘n klas van sy eie!
Hierdie week het Lunel Klopper saam met Sarah en die res van die
Melkstalpersoneel vir die Rustenburg Herald ‘n besonderse lekker kaas- en beesfilet-gevulde “baguette” voorberei.
Hierdie gourmet-toebroodjie is nie net ‘n toebroodjie in ‘n hele ander klas nie maar dit is gewaarborg om ‘n “hit” te wees of jy dit nou vir jou familie voorberei of vir jou gaste.
Dit is beslis die tipe burger wat smaak na nog!

Bestanddele:
10ml olyfolie Knippie sout
‘n Mildelike “knars” van swartpeper 1 helfte van ‘n Franse “baguette”-brood 125ml gemengde soetrissies, in repies gesny
1 teelepel vars gekneusde knoffel 1 helfte van ‘n ui, in blokkies gesny 120g beesfilet-repies
3 eetlepels BBQ-sous
3 eetlepels Cheddar- en Mozzarella-kaas, gerasper
125ml gaar sampioene, in repies gesny 5ml “veggie spice”-speserye
Metode:
In ‘n braaipan, roerbraai die beesfilet- repies in 5ml olyfolie tot dit ligbruin is of na jou smaak, maar wees versigtig om nie die vleis te brand nie! Strooi die sout en swartpeper oor die vleis en skep dit in
‘n kleinbordjie. Voeg die BBQ-sous by en

roer goed.
In ‘n aparte pan, roerbraai die
oorblywende olyfolie, soetrissies, uie en knoffel tot sag maar ferm en voeg dan die sampioene by. Roerbraai totdat die sampioene sag is en voeg dan die “veggie spice” by (alternatiewelik gebruik sout en peper). Plaas bestanddele eenkant.
Sny die brood in die helfte en dan in die lengte af sodat jy vier kwarte het. Smeer die binnekant botter en rooster die brood tot ligbruin.
Verdeel die soetrissies, uie, knoffel en sampioene tussen die brode op ‘n bord wat in die mikrogolf kan pas. Voeg die beesfilet-repies bo-op en dan die kaas.
Mikrogolf die broodjies op hoë hitte tot kaas gesmelt is. Haal die broodjies uit (wees versigtig vir brand!) en plaas die ander kwart bo-op om ‘n toebroodjie te vorm. Gebruik tandestokkies om die broodjies in plek te hou. Bedien met vars gebraaide aartappelskyfies.
