During the week Mr. L. Feldman addressed a meeting of the combined committees of the Union of Jewish ''omen and th ·women's Section of the .A. Ort-Oze on the work of ~he J.D.C.-J.A. and the Ort-Oze in Europe. Mr. Feldman based his talk on personal observations and experi- ences during a recent visit tu Europe.

A highly successful function was held lust 'unday night in the Talmud Torah Hall, luiz ·nherg.

f~Ir. L. Feldman, who is her on holiday from Johannesburg and who ha· n•rentl~· returned from a lengthy tour of Europe, was the principal ,peakc>r. He e:pres. ed thP- hope that thi · ~ociety would soon grow iuto a

ma,,. movement in South Africa. He

stressed the vital imp~rtan e of the Jewish lif now bei1Jg created amongst the post-war ruins in Europe, of tht3 new hope that is being given to our brethren in the variou new democra- cies. The Yiddish language flonrishes, cultural value. are being created on the stage, in li.terature, and so forth.

Mr. P. Barsky traced the history of Biro-Bidjan from the day of its pro- clamation as a Jewish auto:QomouB region to the pn~sent day.- Hn told the large audience of the inevitabl~

difficulties encountered by tho early pioneers and of the rich reward that was thein; in the end. The speaker made it quite clear that Biro-Bidjan was no competition to Palestine and that it wa. the· duty of every Jew -the world over to assist in the upbuilding of the Region, which abounds in mineral wealth, cal} easily aGcommo- date 4,000,000 settlers, has no native population pr0blem and has been given to th Jewish people free of charge.

The iprogran:rne included piano solos by Miss Rachel Rabinowitz and recitations by Mrs. R. Turok, Mrs.

D. Wilkin and Mr. S. Rubinstein.

The mu ica) items were highly appreciated and the recitations in Yiddish were e:qthusiastically received by the large audience.

Hebrew Kindergarten Association.

The following Kindergartens, under the auspices of the Hebrew Kinder- garten Association, re-opened on Wed- nesday, 28th January, 1948: Herzlia Kindergarten, ·ralmud Torah School, Hope Street Cape Town; Sea Point Kindergarte:r{, Synagogue Hall, Marais Road, Sea Point; Muizenberg Kinder- garten, Talmud Torah Hall, Wherry Road, Muizenb&rg.

Kurland-Livland SOOiety.

The Kurland-Livland Society held a Concert at the Muizenberg Pavilion on 29th January which, through the com- bined efforts of all contributiug artis~s, wa. an unqualified success. The hall was we11 filled and the audie1}ce most re::;ponsive.

5708 SHEKEL DRIVE

THE ATTENTION OF THE COMMUNITY IS DRAWN TO THE FOLLOWING REGULATIONS GOVERNING

THE SHEKEL:

1. The Shekel is NOT a donation, but the symbol of membership of the World Zionist Organisation.

2. No person may take more than one Shekel for him or herself (but see Clause 3).

3. It is a resolution of Congress that, to be entitled to vote in elections to the World Zionist Congress, it is necessary to take the Shekel in each year of the Inter-Congress period; that is. both in 194 7 and 1948. However, any person who failed to acquire the Shekel in 194 7 may now acquire it, together with the 1948 Shekel, and thus qualify as a voter-i.e. any such person, upon taking two Shekalim in the forthcoming Shekel Drive, will be eligible to vote.

4. Only registe!ed Shekel holders will be allowed to vote in the 1948 World Zionist Congress Elections.

5. In regard to those who turn 18 this year, it should be noted that they may take the Shekel. and vote in the coming Elections, provided that their 18th birthday falls before Rosh-Hashanah, 4th October, 1948.

6. The price of the Shekel is 2/ 6d.

7. Please give the canvassers your full residential address.

No businesc; address or a box number will be accepted.

8. It is essential to indicate clearly the status of the Shekel holder. i.e. whether Mr.. Mrs. or Miss. and his or her first name.

9. All persons taking the Shekel, who have changed their address since the 194 7 Shekel Drive. should

that both their previous and their present addresses are recorded on the Shekel counterfoil.

10. If you are 11ot approached on Shekel Day, please contact the Secretary, United Shekel Commission. P.O. Box 18, Johannesburg, who will make arrangements accordingly.

11. The closing date for the 5 708 Shekel Drive is 31st March, I 948. Thereafter no one will be permitted to acquire the Shekel.
