Small-scale fishing (SSF) contributes about half of the global fish catch (about 32 million tons). In a country like South Africa, which faces an official unemployment rate of 34.5%, the debate on alternative livelihoods must take such intrinsic values into account for the definition of “decent” – and this is urgently needed.

While a forward contract is an accepted legal contract that includes or eliminates risk for either the buyer or the seller, it can also effectively change the risk associated with climate change – benefiting both the farmer and the buyer. To some extent, the buyer bears all the risk, and to this end an experienced buyer tries to weigh the chances of receiving a future harvest against the best possible price agreed upon in the present. If the chances of a future crop or harvest (a bumper crop) are slim, the buyer will generally try to pay less for future crops and a farmer will most likely accept the reduced price.

But that starts with imparting information to students in an unbiased way: "Girls who took math in high school were more than three times more likely to major in a STEMI field in college than girls who didn't take calculus in high school." Young women need to connect with their role models, which means women in STEMI have a responsibility to showcase their struggles and successes to inspire future generations to also do great things for society. The good news is that many of the key causes of gender differences in STEMI are known and addressable.
We need to be gender responsive from primary school to ensure that learning and skills in STEMI subjects are equal for girls and boys. The narratives need to change for both girls and boys – the way we use 'girl' in sentences needs to be rethought: 'You scream like a girl' and 'you are weak like a girl' need to be eliminated from our children's vocabulary, because words have power. Both are members of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).
