Production areas

Subtropical fruit is categorised as fl eshy fruit (bananas, avocados, litchis, kiwi fruit, mangoes, guavas, pineapples, papayas and granadillas) and nuts (cashew, macadamia, pecan, almonds and walnuts). Each fruit has various cultivars, which have different harvesting dates.

Main production areas

Although the main production areas in South Africa are Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, other fruit types such as granadillas, guavas and pineapples are also grown in the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape, respectively.

Climatic requirements

Subtropical fruit types require warmer conditions and are sensitive to frost and large fl uctuations in temperatures.

Their optimum growth temperature ranges between 23 and 29°C. In South Africa, there is only a subtropical climate, therefore, in cases were fruit crops require a tropical climate, they are grown in subtropical areas because both climate is basically the same. The only difference lies in their rainfall distribution.
