The magazine is not based in South Africa and therefore cannot be considered a South African magazine. The quality of the journal should be verified by efforts to be included in international citation indexes. The journal should consider diversifying its editorial board, especially for further and wider representation of the Global South.

The editors and editorial board are to be commended for the high quality of the journal. The journal should consider expanding its scope to encompass the diversity of the field and attract contributions from outside South Africa. The editor should actively solicit submissions on South African topics (eg psychoanalysis of racism, transformation, gender-based violence or corruption) from leading authors, subject to blind peer review, and invite open peer-review of these articles and online discussion.

Periodic peer review of South African scholarly journals: approved process

  • Background
  • ASSAf peer-review panels
  • Initial criteria
    • Editorial process-related criteria, generally based on ASSAf’s Code of Best Practice
    • Business-related criteria
    • Bibliometric assessments
  • Process guidelines for setting up panels, peer reviewers, panel meetings and

The process of appointing PRP members is led by the president of CSPiSA until the appointment of the commission and its president. The organization of the panel is led by its chairman and supported by an assigned project officer. The project manager must provide reviewers with access to hard or electronic copies of the journals under review.

If the peer reviews are not all available at that stage, they should be made available no later than the date of the meeting so that they can be submitted on the day. Consensus on each of the criteria should be agreed serially, according to the organizer's spoken summary, and noted by the project officer present. The project officer and the organizer must agree on the minutes of the meeting regarding all outcomes within a maximum of two weeks.

Special considerations concerning South African Other Disciplines journals

This placed most journals in an acceptable position relative to international journals within similar or related fields. The complexity of the review process was compounded by the fact that the journals being reviewed covered such a wide range of disciplines. The panel expressed concerns about the delayed publication of one of these journals in 2021 and questioned the scientific quality and business model of the other journal.

The quality of journals mostly ranged from low to medium quality, while high and internationally equivalent quality was outstanding. Among the critical comments of the reviewers, four areas were highlighted, and recommendations related to these areas were sent to the editors of the journals. The Commission received a table showing which of the reviewed journals were indexed by the main international reference platforms, namely Scopus and WoS.

Geography and Population

  • African Population Studies
  • Jàmbá: Journal of Disaster Risk Studies
  • South African Geographical Journal
  • Southern African Journal of Demography
  • Clean Air Journal
  • Urban Forum

With one exception, all associate editors are on the African continent in multiple countries. The journal is owned and published by the Association for African Population Studies, based in Accra, Ghana. The journal should consider appointing a fixed-term editor, perhaps for a maximum of two five-year terms.

The journal should publish more review articles and book reviews and aim to include more researchers of high academic standing who have contributed significantly to the growth of the discipline. There is a need to make more efforts to attract international authorship as well as book reviews of locally produced materials within the discipline. The journal should perhaps consider adding an editor of international standing and experience in journal editing.

Gender

  • Agenda: Empowering Women for Gender Equality
  • Gender Questions

More articles on tourism should be introduced, and reflections not only on cities, but also on small urban centers should be allowed.

Health

  • African Journal of Disability
  • African Journal of Laboratory Medicine
  • Ergonomics SA
  • South African Gastroenterology Review
  • South African Health Review
  • South African Journal of Child Health
  • South African Pharmaceutical Journal
  • Southern African Journal of Gynaecological Oncology

Potential authors should be invited to contribute papers related to Fourth Industrial Revolution topics in a local or regional context. Original research (clinical and laboratory) should be published, and feedback from conferences and grants could be reduced. The range of editions may be quite narrow compared to major scientific journals, but efforts should be made to make the publications more accessible to local and international scientists and academics.

The journal appears to publish mainly review articles, but original research in other categories may be increased. The editor-in-chief and editors should serve a fixed term so that younger researchers can fill the vacant positions, and the editors should be more diverse. The journal should continue to publish review papers on clinically relevant topics for continuing education of practicing pharmacists, but these should be formal in scope or systematic reviews.

Humanities

  • African Human Mobility Review
  • African Journal of Democracy and Governance
  • African Journal of Rhetoric
  • Anthropology Southern Africa

The journal is encouraged to consider publishing material from other parts of the world to complement its international efforts and expand its readership. The journal is encouraged to consider diversifying the editorial board by including academics from institutions other than Rhodes University, as well as from other African countries, and striving for gender balance on the board. African studies conferences and seminars should be considered where regular contributors to the journal can present their work.

The journal is encouraged to consider rethinking the concept of 'cultural history', particularly in South Africa, Southern Africa and generally on the African continent, taking into account theoretical debates that look at the cultural history of the past and the 'new' cultural history. The scope and objectives of the magazine should be expanded by stating unequivocally that the magazine welcomes articles and scientific reflections that encompass a cross-section of the wider South African society. The magazine is encouraged to consider improving the limited coverage in Southern Africa and further on the African continent.

Law

  • Acta Criminologica: African Journal of Criminology and Victimology
  • African Disability Rights Yearbook
  • African Yearbook on International Humanitarian Law
  • Constitutional Court Review
  • Journal of Law, Society and Development
  • LitNet Akademies - Regte
  • South African Intellectual Property Law Journal
  • South African Journal of Bioethics and Law

The journal is encouraged to diversify the editorial team, editorial board and scholars publishing in the journal and to attract contributions from early-career researchers and more scholars from the SADC region. The journal should do more to highlight and contribute to how regional issues relating to Africa as a continent are gaining global relevance. The journal should become a point of reference, not only for African authors, but also as a global journal.

An open call for abstracts and papers is recommended from time to time so that the journal is not limited to invitees only. The editors should invite international Afrikaans or Dutch-speaking authors to contribute to the journal. The journal should try to attract more regional contributions and work on increasing its impact factor.

One reviewer stated: "The breadth of topics covered therein and the intellectual rigor that contributors exude in the manuscripts should serve as compelling guides to new researchers and postgraduate students on how to write legal research papers for publication.

Given the manner in which material is procured for publication and its format (which is more in line with an edited volume, although it lacks attributes such as an index or conference proceedings), the scholarly constitutional law community in South Africa cannot be expected to 'democratically own' publishing as a journal that attracts unsolicited, independently undertaken research in the same way as a conventional law journal. The journal has an impact factor of 0.3. The 'cover details' for papers and English abstracts are mandatory. Reviewers recommend specialization in one discipline, even if is recognized The interdisciplinary nature of the journal draws audiences from across disciplines and provides this unique platform for high-quality, accredited articles in Afrikaans.

The journal is investigating alternative ways to provide non-accredited research materials (eg, the Einstein competition for young researchers). The title of each article works to 'localize' the knowledge, with the unintended consequence of this becoming a weakness as the claimed locality often involves a survey of four or five respondents, which hardly counts as 'local' or 'indigenous' knowledge.
