LOCKDOWN UNDER LEVEL 3
1 June 2020
Places of worship may resume services, but only 50 people are allowed to congregate, depending on the space available and all should wear face masks and hygiene protocols should be in place, including deep cleaning of the areas before and after each services. Religious rituals that will expose worshippers to risk should be avoided.
The Construction sector has been calling for an immediate re-activation of live construction sites that were at various stages of completion when the lockdown came into effect on the 27th of March 2020. Easing of lockdown meant that a lot of construction companies on the verge of collapse could be saved and that allowing the construction sector to resume full operations will salvage what is left of the sector. Strict health and safety protocols will be in place for the protection of employees, but the need for self-regulation by all employers in the industry combating the spread of the disease was in the hands of everyone.
International travel will be allowed for South Africans as confirmed by the Department of Home Affairs on 23 May 2020, but only those who fall within limited categories of work, study, family reunion, to take up permanent residency and for medical reasons. These are indeed the most important categories and make provision for most cases where international travel is an important consideration. The international travel is subject to Department of Home Affairs approval.

The mother (21) was apprehended at a hospital in Hammanskraal where the baby was taken for medical treatment.
It is alleged that neighbours of the suspect heard a baby crying on Friday, 22 May 2020.
On closer inspection, the baby was found and SAPS and EMS were contacted, who then rushed to the scene. Members from the fire department had to break down the pit toilet to reach the baby. The suspect appeared before the Moretele Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 26 May 2020, on charges of attempted murder and concealment of a birth.

BRITS POS – BRITS - A 17-year-old minor was arrested on Friday, 22 May 2020, for attempted burglary at a high school in Makapanstad north east of Brits.
“It is alleged that a security officer was on duty at the school when she heard a strange noise on the roof at approximately 17:30,”
says Col. Adéle Myburgh, spokesperson for SAPS North West. “Upon investigation, she saw three suspicious people on top of the roof. The intruders then jumped off the roof and fled on foot. With the assistance of members of the
community, one of the intruders was caught and handed over to the police,”
concluded Myburgh.
The suspect was then processed in terms the Child Justice Act, 2008 (Act No. 75 of 2008) and released in the care of his parents.
Investigation into the matter continues and the police are following up on information about the other two suspects who are also minors.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena applauded the community and security guard for their collaboration which culminated in the arrest. He once more urged members of the community to report suspicious activities at schools by contacting their nearest police st ations or calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

BRITS POS – BRITS - Cindy Nidene Roos (39), a police sergeant, was on Friday, 22 May 2020, released on R1000 bail upon appearance in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court for thef t and defeating the ends of justice. She will reappear in court on Monday, 31 August 2020.
Roos’ court appearance follows her apprehension on Wednesday, 20 May 2020, in Rustenburg for theft of cigarettes worth R6000.
According to information received, Roos booked out the cigarettes from the Rustenburg police station’s Exhibit Store on Friday, 8 May 2020, under the pretext of dispatching them to the forensic laboratory. The stolen cigarettes were recovered during the arrest.
In another unrelated incident, two police sergeants, Thabang Selebale (40) and Tshepo Pooe (35) were released on a warning when they appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’
Court on Friday, 22 May 2020 for theft and defeating the ends of justice. They were arrested on Wednesday, 20 May 2020 for theft of liquor worth R10 000. Reports suggest that the members connived with two civilian s; Morgen Mofokeng (38) and Timothy Nkola (40) and stole liquor from three women. It is alleged that Mofokeng (38) and Nkola (40) convinced the victims to sell them stokvel club liquor. During the transaction, Selebale and Pooe suddenly emerged from an unmarked police vehicle and then threatened the women with arrest for contravening the Lockdown Regulations. They apparently confiscated the liquor and loaded it in a red Mini Cooper, driven by one of the two civilians and they all drove off from the scene. Investigation into the matter revealed that the liquor was not documented as an exhibit at the police station.
Mofokeng and Nkola were subsequently arrested on Saturday, 16 May 2020. Consequent to their court appearance, Nkola was released on warning while Mofokeng paid R500 and re- appeared in court together with the police officers on Wednesday, 17 June 2020. The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena condemned the members’
unbecoming conduct which he said “cannot be tolerated within our ranks”. He commended the Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit (ACIU) for their commitment in “exposing our own members” who fail to abide by the organisational Code of Conduct.

BRITS POS – BRITS – Last week Brits Pos reported that Madibeng Local Municipality owes Eskom R138 463 908.16 since May 2019 and unless they settle their debt, the electricity supply to Madibeng will be cut on 3 July 2020.
Leon Basson, the DA shadow minister of water and sanitation has written an urgent letter to the minister of finance, Tito Mboweni, requesting intervention by withholding the municipality’s equitable share to facilitate payment of the horrific arrears account as his department has done previously.
The spokesperson for Madibeng Local Municipality, Tumelo Tshabalala responded, but it was too late for publication last week. Herewith the update: “It is indeed true that the municipality is owing Eskom
the amount of money announced by the company.
The municipality has been servicing the debt, both arrears and current account regularly until the March when revenue collection drastically dropped. We are communicating with Eskom to continue servicing the debt and avoid the scheduled power cuts as announced by Eskom. We are as well calling upon public and businesses owing the municipality to play their part in this matter by paying their bills to enable the municipality to service Eskom accounts without fail.”

Verruklike Afrika-vlamboom

• Eggs help the immune system:
Fighting like soldiers on a battlefield, our immune system is the body’s defence against invading viruses, bacteria, and other illness- causing pathogens. Eggs are high in vitamin A and selenium, important nutrients for normal immune function.
• Eggs are good for the eyes:
Egg yolks are good for the eyes as this is the part of the egg that has lutein and zeaxanthin.
These nutrients have been shown to lower the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in older people.
• Eggs are good for the heart:
While eggs do contain cholesterol, eating eggs will not necessarily raise your cholesterol.
Compared to non-egg eaters, those who eat eggs daily have a lower risk of heart disease and stroke, and also a lower risk of dying from these conditions, too.
• Eggs are good for muscle building:
When combined with resistance (weight) training, protein provides the building blocks for muscle building and repair. Eggs are a source of high-quality protein: one large egg contains 7g of protein. In fact, eating whole eggs immediately after resistance exercise results in better muscle building than if just eating the egg white.
• Eat the whole egg, not just the white:
While the egg white contains protein, selenium and the B-vitamin riboflavin, there is a lot of nutrition in the egg yolk. The egg yolk contains heart healthy fats (monounsaturated fats) and half of the protein of the whole egg. If you avoid eating the egg yolk, you’re missing out on vitamin D and iron, too.
• Eggs help vegetarians meet their nutrient needs:
Plant-based eating like vegetarianism is on the rise. Vegetarians are encouraged to supplement their diets with vitamin B12. One large egg contains almost 44% of our B12 needs and is high in protein to meet these nutrient needs.
• Eggs are good as part of an energy-restricted diet:
Eating an omelette at lunch could help you feel fuller and even have you eating less at the next meal, according to a 2011 study.
• Eggs are good to eat during pregnancy:
A vital nutrient for pregnant women is choline, which plays a key role in the development of a baby’s brain and nervous system. Eggs contain choline, making eggs a good choice as part of a healthy diet during pregnancy.
• Eggs can help our young children to grow:
An American study reported that early introduction of eggs to the diets of children 6 – 9 months significantly improved their growth. In a country with high rates of malnutrition, eggs have the potential to contribute to both local and global goals to reduce stunting.Eggs are versatile and store well.
Scrambled for breakfast, quiche for lunch, frittata for dinner or boiled as snack, eggs can be eaten at any time of the day and in so many forms. Eggs also store well in our pantries or fridges.
• Eggs are good because they’re a cost-effective food:
Compared to other protein sources like meat, chicken and fish, eggs are relatively well-priced and offer an affordable source of protein.
• Eggs are good to eat every day:
The Department of Health’s dietary guidelines for South Africans support that we can eat eggs every day in moderation.

A dozen reasons why eggs are good for you
THE HUMBLE EGG REVELATION This is why you have been struggling to sleep
BRITS POS – BRITS - If you log on to any social media platform in the early hours of the morning you are likely to find a lot of people online. Since the country went into lockdown due to Covid-19 a few weeks ago, South Africans have been struggling to fall asleep.
Prof Pieter Kruger, a consultant clinical psychologist and director of the NWU’s Centre for Health and Human Performance (CHHP), gives insight into why so many people are suffering from insomnia.
According to Prof Kruger, with all the uncertainty, stress and anxiety linked to Covid-19, it is no surprise people are struggling to sleep. Our brains do not deal well with uncertainty.
He states that during times of uncertainty, a part in the brain called the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) registers the uncertainty as an error or a gap, which tells the brain to be on high alert, because something could be wrong.
He adds that, from an evolutionary perspective, the uncertainty means that there could be imminent danger around, which in turn switches the brain into self- preservation mode. Once this happens, it activates the brain’s emotional processing centre (limbic system), which triggers cortisol (the stress hormone) and adrenaline, which will help the body to prepare to fight or run.
“The very purpose of these substances being secreted into the body is to keep us awake and alert to deal with potential threats. As a result, this interferes with our ability to fall asleep or stay asleep.”
The consequences of not sleeping
Prof Kruger states that lack of sleep can have significant biochemical and psychological consequences. One of the better-known short-term effects of sleep deprivation is forgetfulness. “Not getting enough sleep affects not only your working memory, but also affects the human attention system, which helps you to focus and to comprehend what is in front of you.”
He adds that lack of sleep also affects one’s cognitive processing speed and mood regulation, and long-term sleep deprivation can have an influence on the testosterone levels of men and affect virility in women. He states that it is important to aim for an average of seven or eight hours of sleep a night on a regular basis.
Prof Kruger’s tips to sleep better during lockdown
• Learn how to deal with and defuse the anxiety: get a good self-help book or speak to a psychologist.
• Maintain good sleep hygiene and a night-time routine: stop reading or watching the news before you go to bed, as this fuels the uncertainty and creates anxiety.
• Avoid blue-spectrum light before you go to bed:
mobile phones, tablets and laptops radiate high levels of blue-spectrum light. Exposure to this type of light tricks your brain into thinking that it is still daytime.
• Structure your day: try to go to bed at roughly the same time every night and try to get up at the same time.
• Be physically active: try to walk for 3 to 5 minutes on the hour.
• Do not panic about not being able to sleep: even if you are just lying in bed, your body and brain are still recovering.

Nissan Group of Africa recently welcomed Gauteng Premier David Makhura and a delegation of public officials to the company’s manufacturing plant in Rosslyn. The purpose of the visit was to confirm for themselves that the plant has taken the necessary precautions to protect employees and their loved ones against the COVID-19 virus in advance of the plant’s reopening in June. In addition to Makhura, the delegation consisted of the MEC of Health Bandile Masuku, MEC for Gauteng Department of Economic Development, Agriculture and Environment - Morakane Mosupyoe and Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

BRITS POS – BRITS - The necessity to educate the rural community about the Covid-19 lockdown regulation gazetted by the government gained momentum when Jericho Social Crime Prevention members, WO Rakale and Const Motlhabi, accompanied by Maria Nkabinde from Brits Communication on Wednesday, 20 May 2020 took to the streets.
They focused primarily on the the wearing of face masks when in a public domain and maintaining the 2m social distance. The objective was to target public places in rural areas were the community members converge in large numbers. The campaign started at Jericho clinic, the taxi rank, Makgabetloane clinic and proceeded to Jonathan where the tuckshop owners were urged to not allow customers not wearing face masks inside their shops.
Since incidents of vandalism in schools are rampant during the lockdown, community members were urged to be the eyes and ears of the police by reporting any criminality taking place around the learning institutions.

South African Cross Country Series on hold
BRITS POS – BRITS - The South African Cross Country Series (SACCS) are extremely concerned about the post effects of Covid-19 pandemic and the current lockdown, but share a vision of resuming racing in the not too distant future.
They expect the impact of the coronavirus on the wider world will continue but believe to be well positioned to build on the excellent start they had to the season, in February, at the Mpumalanga 400.
“Taking advantage of the down time, we would appreciate if you could let us have your constructive unbiased suggestions or proposal in respect of the sporting and technical rules and regulations for the 2021 SA Cross
Country Championship (SACCS).”
All input to be in writing and submitted to by no later than 15 June 2020. All proposals will be tabled for evaluation at the Technical Working Group meeting in early July, for possible consideration and inclusion in the 2021 MSA Standing Supplementary Regulations.
Please submit via e-mail to charmaine@

“Karate is not just an art, but a way of life, wat beteken baie ekstra toewyding moet nou ingespan word om gemotiveerd te bly en om te bly oefen,” sluit Visagie op
‘n positiewe noot af.
